Why are they even thinking about the draconian idea of taking our sick pay conditions away, forget the tiny minority cheats . Our workforce work very honestly and hard to make the money for RM, and a very comforting condition is that our great Co, when we are ill mentally physically or just sick, it pays our great workers full pay for being off sick and rightly so , this is one condition that should not change , it enables our workers to get back to health, without worrying about how much debt we are going to accumulate through being off work.
If the Co decide to go this road, it will be a tragic loss to our hard working people, ............ could Mr Thomson and Co manage without our sick pay conditions.............

THESE minorities are the ones that are putting your brilliant sick policy at risk!
No they're not.
Management's inability or unwillingness to deal with these people is.
I agree with what you say on management's failure to deal with it, but if it wasn't for the minority abusing it in the first place the subject may not always be in the spotlight of the ivory towers.
It's a chicken and egg scenario.
Every business has that minority of piss takers but not every business lets them away with it.
If management weren't so inept that tiny minority wouldn't exist etc..

Senior management are very naughty though and it's deliberate, they know how useless their managers are at dealing with poor behaviour on an individual level so they'll give the minority enough rope and then hang us all.

The CWU of yesteryear fought very hard for our existing terms and conditions, and that includes our current sick pay policy. And this is actually one of the terms that I believe really apply to the present day.

The fact of the matter is that our job is more physically exhausting now than it ever was. Because we still have an ageing workforce. We still walk half marathons lugging bags. We still do extra lapse to cover sickness/absence etc. You can't get a week or even a day off for love nor money.

P*ss takers aside because I'm not one - but is it really any wonder that staff go sick??
On the face of it, shareholder value is the dumbest idea in the world.

Maybe if managers were a bit more flexible with holidays and odd days leave the sick leave may come down,,,, who could possibly think that the 2 are linked

Assuming the figures are correct there's clearly an issue when 25% of the workforce are taking the majority of the sickness, although I've no idea why the other 75% now have to suffer rather than the company get to the bottom of the issues.

You're right. The problem is that RM monitor sick leave. And in every office there's always a small number who take the piss. Got one in our office who openly admits to colleagues that he plays the system. While that is going on then RM will target sick pay.
RM should ensure Doms deal with and implement the conduct code to its final conclusion to those that openly take the pee.
I agree. But the fact remains that people are giving RM plenty of ammunition to try and get rid of the 1st week self cert. If people are rarely sick, then they will rarely be affected. These morons are screwing everything the union have fought for because they see it as a god given right to go off when it suits. The bloke behind me did it for Wimbledon the other week, and I'm not the only one to have noticed. We used to, until he was pensioned off a few years back (for prostate cancer) have a bloke who always went off just after Christmas.

Just a question: Does the 25% include people who have ongoing health issues that are covered by the Equality Act?
If so then what happens if they still have to go sick due to ongoing health issues under the new sick pay proposal?

If they had any sense they would do a good PR job and offer an American style “duvet day” process where you can phone in ad-hoc 2 days a year as a freebie.
Save them money, they don’t look like the Victorian workhouse bastards they are and most people would get on with it.

Unbelievable that people are blaming staff rather than management for the draconian removal of rights fought and clawed for over practically decades.

FFFS the 25% ISNT the same people year on year.
Neither is the 75% made up of the exact same people year on year.

Sometimes people take more sick days.
Sometimes less.

Dont be suckered in by the statistics, everyone knows the old adage.

Given the only dance we get to listen is from RM to were bound to be sucked in, the CWU are totally silent.

CWU need to acquire the services of an equal and opposite expert in statistics to fight RMs in an epic battle to the death. (Figuratively obv)

I'm with you on the silence from CWU towers. I'm sure they're concentrating on the big picture rather than getting distracted with details, however alarming.
RM would seem to be 'flooding the area' with a multitude of distractions.

How are the CWU totally silent?

I've seen and heard plenty of the top brass on the telly, radio and YouTube/Facebook recently...

Gate meetings all around the country too, hardly total silence is it?

I think the point is the union seems to be struggling to counter the specific arguments Royal Mail are putting forward to justify their proposals.

It's not really enough these days to just bang the strike drum, people are much more clued up on how these things work now.

The CWU should be pulling apart these arguments one by one and showing how shallow, untrue and unworkable they actually are.

Instead we get the same old tired rhetoric from the same old faces.

This ^^^^^^^

We get little sense of intelligence and reason from our union leadership. Instead all we hear is bluff and bluster. If this is what they take into negotiations with RM then it is little wonder that they are unable to negotiate a decent settlement on our behalf.

That's precisely what they are doing according to the CEO, however, when it comes to the CSP changing it's opening hours it seems clear there's been lengthy discussions.

I haven't a clue where the union stands re the sick policy changes.
