EASTER BANK HOLIDAY


Easter Saturday, 11th April 2020 – Non-Service Day

Further to LTB 185/20 circulated on 6th April, please find attached the response the union has received from Sally Ashford, Chief HR Officer at RMG. Colleagues will note that unfortunately the business has declined to action the CWU’s proposal on the grounds that seeking to declare a non-service day at this time would not be consistent with the company’s objectives. Obviously this response is disappointing, especially in light of the additional pressures that many postal workers have faced during this difficult time and the fact that having the Saturday off would have allowed them a much needed break with their families.

Bank Holiday Policy

Colleagues will also note that in response to my letter of 8th April (attached) the company has confirmed that the current bank holiday policy in respect of overtime payments and Lieu Days has not been changed and should therefore be applied without any difficulty.

Or have been precautionary suspended. Or are on holiday.

To quote a paragraph of the response;
"To voluntary step aside from our service obligations through a rest day, no matter how well intentioned, does not sit comfortably"

Given the decision by Ofcom not to penalise Royal Mail, if they did not meet the official requirement, it does appear the "service obligations" in regard to Ofcom were not at issue. However it does show, imo, the importance of a six day USO letter & packet delivery.

It did make me laugh.
The CWU called the board all the names under the sun, had an industrial action ballot and accused them of putting our lives at risk... then asked for a little favour.

Under the circumstances I was expecting the reply to go.

Dear Terry,
we note your letters and disregard them. We love to watch your videos spouting all sorts of fighting talk to your members ( right on comrade ) and yet, apart from some aggrieved emails and yet more letters, you simply don't take any action to make us change our minds ( about anything ). We shall continue to take Executive Action changing start and finish times and methods of working as we please ( your members have to agree as there is little / no opposition from many of your local reps ) .

We may have to delay our ultimate goals slightly due to all this fuss over a virus ( personally none of us want to be within 2km of your members, let alone 2 metres ).

However, we must congratulate you and your cohorts for your inaction during this crisis as the parcel count has gone through the roof and the concerted efforts of the delivery guys to get as much done as possible in a shift means we now have the data capture to prove that a 14% efficency improvement over the next 4 years is easily achievable and will be expected. Unfortunately the improvements required to achieve your members 6% pay rise over 3 years is 15% ( we may increase this at our discretion, especially if we get close to achieving it ).

Anyway, we are off until Tuesday at the earliest, keep up the good work.
