LTB 185/2018: Attendance procedure - Update

No. 185/2018

29 March 2018

TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS

Dear Colleague,

Attendance Procedure – Update

Due to a surge in the number of complaints around the current Occupational Health model and approach to sickness absence the department met with Royal Mail yesterday where we discussed the issues reported.

These include:-

Equality Act – a perceived lack of proper consultation and inappropriate issuing of attendance reviews
Moving to Leaving the Business through Ill Health(LTBIH) too quickly
Part day absences
Inappropriate use of the notification / line in the sand letter
Contact Strategy being abused
Inappropriate threats to and actual stoppage of sick pay
Difficulties in rehabilitation plans
Inconsistency in timescales and getting / not getting OH advice.
We have agreed to meet again next week as a matter of urgency to find solutions to the issues facing our members.

The solutions will include setting up interventions in the worst perceived areas, retraining on aspects of the attendance procedure to ensure the attendance agreement is adhered to.

This activity will link into the work we started last year and the activity we have committed to carry out in the Four Pillars and Pay agreement. Both parties are committed to moving this forward as quickly as possible.

All enquiries regarding the content of this LTB should be addressed to the PTCS Department, quoting reference 415. Email address: khawkins@cwu.org.

Yours sincerely

Ray Ellis

Assistant Secretary

This has been rumbling on for years
If your face doesn’t fit ,you get a stage
If your not mates with manager .you get a stage

Same again for getting your wages stopped .
Same again ,constant calls while sick and meetings

If the buffoons can’t even manage fairly ,how can they be expected to understand the equality act

When I was off for cancer my manager gave me a stage warning. When I told him it was against the Equality Act he argued with me and said that it wasn't. As previous posters have said, managers haven't got a clue. Probably not their fault, I expect that they don't get trained properly.

Yes it is disgusting, but just as disgusting is the amount of reps who will do feck all about it, or side with the managers for an easy ride.
I have even has a senior rep say to me when I complained about being issued with a stage after 10 days in hospital after a bad seizure, "that I should keep my trap shut, as all the other posties will kick off if your stage gets quashed. "
Royal Mail managers.....about as popular as a t.urd in a swimming pool!
The DDA/Equality Act demands action,NOT words......adjustments NOT Occupational Health referrals.Case No:2505901/09
Royal Mail is an Equal Opportunities Employer..It discriminates against everybody.

I personally wouldn't give a f**k what other posties think about me getting treated differently because of a disability related matter, that is none of their business, i had a stage 1 rescinded by using the grievance procedure which i know is unusual but i'm happy the outcome was in my favor, i don't know how good or badly disabled employees are treated by other employers but it is definitely a constant struggle to get this one to do the right thing and show a little empathy.

Forget empathy , how about exploiting someone's illness to make them complete on unpaid overtime by telling them their extended delivery is peculiar to them, then four other walks return late due to workload?
How low can you go ? How do you quantify the harm done ?
Confidence;self esteem - undermined ;isolated and victimized whilst vulnerable ,and all done with lies.

Royal Mail is a Mental Health supporter ? Guess thats true in a way.....

My local rep highlighted a member's absences covered under Equality Act and line manager did not issue Attendance warning following meeting. As highlighted in previous posts managers are confused on how to apply Equality Act and it is up to CWU reps to represent members at attendance meetings to ensure the rules are applied correctly. There is calls for managers to be retrained on how to apply rules and if members feel they are not getting good representation from a rep speak to your Branch and raise the issue.

It's very easy for a manager to find out what is and is not covered by the equality act, HR are only a phone call away and I'm sure there are fact sheets and guides on the intranet for them to look up.
It's bollox.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

There isn't really a definitive list of what's covered and what isn't. It depends on the impact of the condition on the individual and the long term outlook. That's where we tend to run into trouble, if you have something the Dom hasn't heard of (almost everything) then according to them it's made up and you should just "man up".

It seems everyone who is off sick gets letter within 2 days for face to face meeting with Dom. It doesn't seem to matter what's wrong with you , whether it's mental health problem or whatever. I've been off with a serious back problem for 3 month's , I've had face to face meetings ,with union rep of course , he phones me , I phone him etc it's never ending. I understand there paying you sick pay , but it seems like your being harassed and pressured back to work.

First, of all may I offer my deepest condolences.

Second, get in touch with the rep, any rep, and get the meeting postponed. Any decent rep should lose their nut over this gross invasion of private grief, and any sensible manager/human being would have realised that and made sure the meeting would be towards the end of the 28 days, not 2 days in. :arrrghhh :arrrghhh

Any decent manager would be ashamed if they acted like this. Royal Mail you train your manager to be automatons unable to think for themselves or place stuff into context, and its posties that are suffering.
