LTB 338/17 - Four Pillars of Security – Unit Representative Briefings

No. 338/17

20th June 2017

Dear Colleagues,

Four Pillars of Security – Unit Representative Briefings

Further to LTB 329/17 circulated on 15th June, I write to advise colleagues that release for Unit Representatives wishing to attend the above briefing in their advised location will be on an unpaid basis. We believe the attached advice has been issued to managers.

Branches must therefore ensure (if not already done so) that Unit Representatives submit their release application via the agreed application process.

In order to facilitate and maximise Unit Representatives’ attendance, Branch Secretaries must confirm that the Branch will meet the cost of the unpaid leave when returning the union leave form.

It is important that all Branches complete the necessary documentation as expediently as possible so that managers are able to support our Unit Representatives’ applications for release.

The continued support of colleagues in respect of this and the wider Four Pillars of Security campaign activity is appreciated.

Any enquiries in relation to this LTB should be addressed to the DGS(P) Department quoting reference 24000.

Yours sincerely

Terry Pullinger
Deputy General Secretary (Postal)

Apologies if I am being a bit dense here - but what costs are branch expected to meet exactly?

If a rep is given unpaid leave then obviously that means that they (RM) need to pay someone else to do the reps work on overtime. I get that. But surely they use the savings from not paying rep for that day to pay the OT. Therefore, what costs? Because if RM are expecting the CWU to pay the cost of cover, when they are already saving paying leave to rep, then that is obviously unfair.

EDIT: Unless it means branch will be paying reps, but then why is it classed as unpaid leave?

Its unpaid leave with costs covered by the branch because its a CWU only matter, not a joint thing, therefore RM have no obligation to provide paid release.
