My own ex union - The CWU
I cannot believe what I have just read.
I was a member of the UPW/CWU for around 42 years and have paid subs for all that time and this pops up from a friend.
The new pay aggreement is backdated to April 2020 and I left RM on 11th Dec 2020.
RM and CWU agree not to include any ex employee who left the business before 18th Dec 2020, resulting in the loss of around £367 after tax and Nat Ins for myself. A nice little saver for those who worked through a lot of the pandemic. My union agreed to this.
So glad I never took up the option of being a retired member.

You win some , you lose some!
A few hundred £££'s isn't going to make much difference.
You've left the company, time to move on.......

Oh I am not that bothered. I am not a member any more. Friday after next I get £750 pension advice money and just waiting on my £200 long service gift vouchers coming through the post. It's the principle. Never ever seen that before in an agreement for any back dated pay deal our union has had. Nice touch.

The cut off date should be the date the pay rise applies from.
There's no logical or moral reason for any other date other than to save money.

Technically you could say the pay rise applies from April 2020, hence the back pay.Woody Guthrie wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 09:44The cut off date should be the date the pay rise applies from.

But personally I would say a more logical cut off date would be the date the CWU announced the ballot results.

Exactly.Technically you could say the pay rise applies from April 2020, hence the back pay.
That's not logical, it's entirely arbitrary. Why not national stamp collecting day?But personally I would say a more logical cut off date would be the date the CWU announced the ballot results.
What you do in these situations is incentivise the business to drag the talks out. The longer they take to reach agreement the less they pay out.

Look at it this way I am getting paid an extra 2.7% for the work I did between April 2020 and December 2020.
Stephen is not despite being employed between these dates.
Logically why?

In this case Stephen has lost out, just as I seem to remember he did with the Christmas bonus when he left a week early. But on the plus side he's taken his NRA65 at a time he'll benefit from the £750 'advice money', which most won't get.
You could say he should have his back pay aswell, and yes he probably should. But he decided he was going to leave RM on a certain date no matter what and if that means he loses out because of decisions made afterwards, then that's life as far as I'm concerned.
Some you win, some you lose!
I wish Stephen all the best, but this isn't really worth a debate as far as I'm concerned.

That really doesn’t sound fair at all, it seems to me they just wanted to get this deal through and not think of ex employees at all, god knows what changes they will start to bring in now the deal is agreed

I am sure if Stephen knew there was a cut off date well in advance , he could have delayed his departure a week ! This is not right !

Stephen wasn't to know about the agreement when he left, but if what RobertT says in his post above is correct, he didn't think about the Christmas bonus dates despite that being fairly easy to find out.derricksmyth wrote: ↑17 Feb 2021, 13:50I am sure if Stephen knew there was a cut off date well in advance , he could have delayed his departure a week ! He missed out on something he had control over, but is moaning about also missing out on something he didn't!
The money involved isn't massive, but by the sounds of it, had he waited another week, he'd have got both.
