Re point 18 - I know the USO is only 5 days for parcels but we all deliver parcels on a Saturday, so isn't this
demand for 6 day USO for parcels a bit of a moot point? Or are a significant number of parcels held back at the mail
centres which could be delivered on Saturday?

The union want parcels to be included in the 6 day USO for one reason.

So that once letters go down to 5 days they can pretend that they've still technically defended a 6 day USO.

Smoke and mirrors.

Any parcels that come in during the night get sorted and sent off to the relevant DOs for delivery in the morning. Any 1C parcels posted get dispatched to the relevant MCs the same day that they were posted (intra gets sorted to 1 selection then sorted to DOs on nights). Any 2C parcels posted get dispatched the following day to the relevant MCs (they don't get processed until the day they're dispatched on), (intra gets sorted to 1 selection then sorted to DOs on nights).

We don't have the room to hold mail back till Saturday so any holding back of mail will have to be done at the DOs

If parcels have a uso of five days, apart from Sunday which day do they not have to be delivered?

You might find parcels could end up a seven day operation if the demand requires it

Currently, Saturday. But RM chooses to deliver them as a six day service. Just because the regulator demands a five day service doesn't mean RM cannot deliver a six day service if it chooses (which it does), neither does it give staff an exemption from delivering packets on a Saturday.

I wouldn't be surprised to eventually see RM having Sunday parcel deliveries (probably just Tracked) using the LAT hubs

Yeh if the demand is there 7 days parcels is gonna happen, 5 days letters but with this new option for mail we’ll officially have the green light to do much less of a delivery which would free up time to do other work, excess mail and parcels off other rounds, I know there’s no compulsory redundancies supposedly but theres gotta be a knock on affect for the amount of staff required surely. That’s my concern with this, job security, not bothered what I do in my shift/hours.

How are they going to sell that one to staff of 30+ years service who drive?
Staff that joined 12-13 years ago and don't/won't drive for RM do the Mon-Fri shifts, whilst long serving members get the weekend work (at best) as part of a rota.

Well we're not there yet, but if the scenario described pans out there might be a blunt choice for some people.

What was the phrase they were beating us over the head with a couple of months ago again?

Something like - "...there's a job for those who can and want to work for Royal Mail..." wasn't it?

In that case it will become possibly one of the only companies out there that discriminates against those with a higher skill set. And before anyone jumps in, I'm not talking about people who have been contractually employe to drive, I'm talking about those who entered into being the driver in shared vans about 10 years ago.

Having everyone do the weekend work on a rota perhaps?

It's really quite simple.

Drivers will have a pick of duties and duty patterns, 4 day weeks, Wallingtons and 9 day fortnights for the price of working maybe 1 in 4 Saturdays.

Non drivers will be allocated a duty (perhaps even made reserves) and get a set 5 day week.

It sells itself.
