Royal Mail offers to hold talks with CWU if union removes strike threat

UK's Royal Mail Plc has written to the Communications Workers Union (CWU) saying it will enter into talks "without preconditions" if the union agrees to remove the threat of strike action over the Christmas, the company said here on Tuesday.

“If the CWU agrees to rule out industrial action for the remainder of the calendar year – a critical time for our customers, we will commit to holding open discussions with no preconditions aimed at resolving the dispute,” Royal Mail said in a statement.

Reacting to the company's bid, the union said here in a tweet it would consult the CWU Executive on Wednesday and determine its response.

The union said earlier this month that staff wanted a nationwide strike after it alleged the company had failed to adhere to a pension deal agreed last year.

Royal Mail last year reached a deal with the union over pensions, pay, a shorter working week, culture and operational changes, after nearly 10 months of negotiations.

I got a memo on my PDA today with this message. It fairly lifted my spirit after a particularly heavy day. It seems " the penny has finally dropped" in the Royal Mail Board Room. . . and this is to be encouraged !

Having said the above the idea that we should ditch any idea of Industrial Action is "nonsense". We have not issued a "threat" . . . but rather... we have informed the business of our legal right to withdraw our labour if " the four pillars agreement" is not re-instated and acted upon. It could be done in a minute.

The "legal" withdrawal of labour is the only real leverage open to working class men and woman in the workplace today. Notification is not a threat. . . but rather a pledge we have made to one another . . . in an attempt to save this splendid institution ! ! !

Its a negotiation, both sides setting out their stalls, of course RM is going to ask that the strike threat is taken off the table, the CWU have to say no to that because its our weapon of war in the negotiations, no one is going negotiate seriously if the other party is at significant disadvantage (bit like the Brexit talks really).

Both sides will do a bit of willy waving then negotiate.
