A number of people have asked if they get paid to strike, obviously the answer is no but years ago you used to get strike money, why don't you anymore out of interest? Has it been banned or can the union not afford it?

I think legislation was passed in the early 80's to outlaw strike payments along with secondary picketing. I also believe legislation was also passed at the time to limit the amount of picketers to 4 on a picket line at any one time.

The Code of Practice on picketing says usually there should be no more than 6 people outside an entrance to a workplace.

we were out for about 18 days in 1995 or 96. we got 50 quid. I remember the rep gave us each a cheque for the money out of the boot of his car as we all crowded round. but that was then....not sure about now.

Police can limit number of people and strike would end. Picket is not the safest place to be. You can face abuse of power by the police. Maybe the situation would change if there will be more organizations such as aaappp. Have anybody heard about the association against police power and abuse

Secondary picketing, that is picketing somewhere that is not your place of work is unlawful.

The number of pickets actually manning the picket line is limited to six but there is no limit to the number who can attend a picket line to offer support as long as they are not breaking any other law like obstruction or breach of the peace.

There is nothing legally stopping strike payments by the union and most branches have a hardship fund for those in genuine financial trouble however most people understand that if the union were to pay everyone to go on strike they would be bankrupt on day one. The 1971 strike is a good example of a union having to go back in on poorer terms because they were almost broke.

We tend to go out in one or two days of action at a time, I suggest if you can't afford to take that hit try to get a bit of overtime in now and start saving.
