Thats not how it works

Its 'roles/tasks/jobs' whatever you want to call it that go not the people who are doing the jobs

They would still have their seniority to choose something else - just that there would be less to choose from compared to the last resign

Same as floaters who have good seniority , they might do away with floaters if its 5 day deliveries but that doesnt mean that those who chose the floating duties are the ones who lose their job
But if there are fewer collection duties to choose from how can the same number of collection drivers be employed?

They fill the roles vacated in delivery or processing by VRs.

Obviously Royal Mail doesn't have a standard way of working at different locations around the UK, no surprise there! My local mail centre has a collection hub and it is run as a totally separate unit even though they are in the same building, ie they can't apply for jobs in processing. When the mail centre had a few VRs recently collection drivers weren't allowed to apply despite being under the same roof.

Obviously the vrs were for processing an not collection duties.

Yes. that's what I'm getting at in a roundabout way. When collection duties go, which they will with the rate work is transfering to deliveries, a collection driver won't be able to walk into a job in processing.

Being under same roof means nothing we have distribution collections an delivery staff under one roof.. all depends on were rm are offering vrs.

Different process., that's an internal transfer. Priority goes first to those already receiving the same shift allowance.

If you apply for a role because your job has been removed you are considered "displaced".

Displaced staff take priority and while we have an agreement on no compulsory redundancies the business must find an alternative role for them.

If you guys are really, really bored there's a document called Managing the Surplus Framework (MTSF) that lays out what happens when people are displaced. And yes people do just move across functions when there are no other positions left in their old role.

Tman will fill you in on what happens when old Joe the delivery guy gets to play with the machines.

We've had a few processing staff transfer to distribution once they'd got the class 2 license (based on them driving AFAIK only 600s)

Any duties in processing where the duty holder takes VR just get them hours taken out and not replaced

Perhaps I wasn't clear enough. During a large scale voluntary redundancy exercise if one area can't get enough VRs these excess members can transfer to another function which can in turn increase the number of potential VRs in that function.

Better?

It wouldn't increase the number of VRs, it'd just mean less casuals would be needed. Probably most shifts locally use a dozen + casuals every day which could be replaced by those displaced from collections, though they'd all have to be leave reserves
