LTB341/17 Post Office: Pay Negotiations 2017/18 - Rejection of Pay Offer

No.341/2017

20th June 2017

Dear Colleague

POST OFFICE: PAY NEGOTIATIONS 2017/18 – REJECTION OF PAY OFFER

Further to LTB 318/17 dated 9th June.

On Monday 19th June our negotiating team met with the Post Office again as part of the ongoing discussions surrounding our pay claim.

I am now able to report that a formal offer was tabled by the Post Office as follows:

An unconditional, one year pay increase of 2% from 1st April 2017 for all CWU grades (not flowing through to allowances including London Weighting).
Earlier today the Postal Executive unanimously rejected the pay offer above as being inadequate especially as the Post Office has been vocal in stating that a £10m profit was made for 2016/17 which is seemingly the first time in 15 years that a profit has been made. Indeed we have secured significantly better pay rises against higher losses in previous years. Furthermore, it should be remembered by all members in the Post Office that the Retail Price Index (RPI) was 3.2% in February and this has steadily risen over the last three months to 3.7% in May, with further increases predicted during the summer by all respected forecasters.

Additionally, the Post Office has not responded to the other key components of our pay claim, so this provides further justification to reject the offer. In essence, the 2% offer by the Post Office, even if it flowed through to allowances as it has traditionally, is simply not good enough in today’s environment with the cost of living increasing, thus resulting in a pay cut in real terms. Clearly the Post Office can afford to make a much better offer towards our aspirations and we will be inviting them to do exactly this when we next meet which has been provisionally agreed for next Wednesday 28th June.

Further developments will be reported.

Yours sincerely
