A Herne Bay post office worker defrauded his employer and a customer out of more than £5,000.

Richard Arnold, 53 of The Downings in Herne Bay initially denied theft by employee and fraud by abuse of position.


But at Thanet Magistrates’ Court on November 14 last year he was found guilty of both charges.

Kent Police was first tipped off when the victim noticed unusual withdrawals from his bank accounts.

The man usually withdrew £200 each week from the Rough Common post office but when he realised additional withdrawals of between £250 and £500, to a total of £950, had been made he informed the police.


When officers arrested Arnold in March 2017, investigations revealed the safe in the post office he worked at was missing £4,500.

Today (January 23) at Canterbury Crown Court, Arnold was sentenced to two years and ordered to pay back the money to the customer he stole from.


Investigating officer Detective Constable Jeff Brunger said: “Arnold abused his position when he was left in charge of running the post office.

“He showed a flagrant disregard for the trust and responsibility placed in him not only by the post office manager but by the customer who also became a victim of his.

“I hope this sentence sends a message to anyone thinking of committing crimes like this in our community, especially against those most vulnerable.”
