Headington Post Office 'closed forever' despite petition

The Post Office serving a community near Oxford has officially 'closed forever' despite a petition which tried to save the service.

Headington Post Office in London Road shut its doors for the last time on Wednesday, December 31, as the building its in is set to be demolished.

More than 1,200 people signed a petition to keep the much-used post office, which is in the Co-op food store in Headington, open, but the campaign was unsuccessful.

A notice of 'festive opening hours' placed in the post office window by staff notified customers with the sad message of 'closed forever' from New Year's Day.

Plans to replace the building with a research and office space were approved by Oxford City Council in October this year.

Anneliese Dodds, Labour MP for Oxford East, was one of those concerned about the closure of the service in Headington and said at the time: "I have worked hard to keep this post office open for many years - and we won't stop now."

Although the closure was confirmed earlier this month, the MP said Post Office had "received interest" in the opening of a new branch nearby.

It's the first time since 1915 that central Headington will be left without a post office, with the nearest branches now in Risinghurst and Wood Farm, or in St Clement's in Oxford.

At one point in the 20th century, the area had three post offices serving the villages, in Headington High Street, Quarry and New Headington, then known as Highfield.
