Tony Blair knew of flaw with Post Office's Horizon IT system but went ahead anyway, report claims

For 15 years thousands of postmasters were accused of thieving from their tills
Tony Blair gave the order to build the 'flawed' system at the heart of the scandal
More than 700 postmasters were wrongfully convicted, with some going to jail

Tony Blair gave the order to build the computer system at the heart of the Post Office IT scandal despite being warned it was ‘increasingly flawed’, according to a report.

The Labour prime minister ‘received multiple communications’ about the ‘chequered history’ of the Horizon accounting system, but went ahead anyway.

Between 2000 and 2015, thousands of postmasters were accused of thieving from their own tills when unexplained ‘shortfalls’ appeared in the accounts.

Dozens of bugs in the Horizon system, which digitised post office accounting for the first time, were to blame.

More than 700 people were wrongfully convicted, with some going to jail, while at least four people took their own lives after being hounded for repayments.

The report, passed to the Daily Mail, claims to show Mr Blair pushed ahead despite being given the option to renegotiate or cancel the Horizon contract.

Its author Eleanor Shaikh, who has campaigned for Horizon victims, said: ‘Tony Blair made the decision on more than one occasion.

In 1998 he gave his authorisation to extend the project, and he made a final decision to go ahead... One has to understand who put this nightmare in place, and who set this off on this trajectory of disaster.’

Tory peer Lord Arbuthnot said the report’s findings ‘make the scandal all the more dreadful’.

The report has been lodged with the Post Office Inquiry, which will hear evidence about decisions made in the early days of the Horizon IT system next month.

It cites a briefing note, released to The National Archives, from former No 10 policy head Geoff Mulgan who warned the Horizon project had been ‘beset by problems’ and was seen ‘as a flawed system’.

Horizon had already been scrapped by another government department after concerns were raised in testing.

Whether you agree or disagree with the Iraq War the act of invasion is not in itself a war crime.

A war crime is a specific act or behaviour carried out in the conduct of armed conflict.

Murder of unarmed combatants, rape, torture, the use of certain prohibited weapons such as chemical or biological, genocide..

An act of aggression in itself can be illegal but not a war crime.

There won't be any trials in the Hague, it is already the general consensus that the war was at best legally dubious but as no UN member state has formally lodged a complaint it is unlikely there will ever be any kind of judgement handed down.

We went to war in Iraq, led by Tony B'liar' based on a catalogue of lies. Tony B'liar' has the blood on his hands of millions of people who have been either killed or maimed for his ego trip. If anyone is in any doubt about this, then ask the parents of our brave soldiers who died or suffered life changing injuries in either Iraq or Afghanistan for this vile mans illegal war.

....And for this a war crimes trial in the Hague should happen, and Tony B'liar' must face justice for his crimes against humanity, unless you dont think being responsible for millions of deaths, since his illegal war, counts as a war crime......

Are all the deaths in Iraq the responsibility of Tony Blair including car accidents?
It's that kind of hyperbolic nonsense that makes any kind of interesting debate on here about politics completely pointless.

Do some research on the numbers, the players and the main causes of death and don't do that childish thing with his name, we're not f***ing 12 years old.

Woody Guthrie.....
I am very well versed on the numbers, the players, the FACTS, and the main causes of death and destruction, knowing many who served in Iraq and Afghanistan, thank you very much, including family members!

Who the hell do you think you are, effectively defending B'LIAR' (as you must be f***ing 12, hope this upsets you, it damn well should). The reason no one can have debate about politics on here is due to idiots like you supporting the indefensible. Your comments are infantile and offensive in defending a war criminal (car accidents FFS!....FFS!!!).

B'LIAR's illegal war in Iraq indirectly and directly has killed millions across the world, and resulted in the formation of ISIS, to name one as an example. These groups led to further untold misery and death due to the removal of Saddam Hussein, who's regime effectively controlled the warlords inside Iraq's border, and prevented their formation, but then this argument is lost on people like you who are obviously B'LIAR' faithfull devotees.

I suggest you go and meet some mothers of brave servicemen who lost their lives due to B'LIAR's illegal and totally unneccessary war, you would not last 2 minutes with your love in with B'LIAR' attitude!

You've really just proved my point better than I could.
I'm not a Blair supporter.
I'm not a supporter of the Iraq war.
I'm just someone who can see the big picture a little better than you can.

You even seem to have forgotten that the majority combatants in the invasion was the US outnumbering any other troops by around 10-1.

The problem with picking a boogeyman and lumping all the blame on one person is that it lets all of the other players off the hook.

The blame for the deaths in Iraq lies at the feet of many people, I'm happy to call them all out including but unlike you not exclusively Blair.

This thread is about B'LIAR', hence my comments are about this utterly vile human being, but you have correctly mentioned there are many other players in this illegal war, who are indeed full of blame, but the 2 main protagonists, who's lies ultimately resulted in the deaths and injury to millions are Bliar and that village idiot, Bush. Both of these should be held accountable for their lies that led to the illegal war in Iraq, and all the subsequent misery that grew out of the vaccuum that is post Bliar and Bush, Iraq.

No, the thread is about an important issue that some of our members have suffered with for over 20 years, and indeed some have been sent to prison.

I'd appreciate it if the topic could get back on that subject.
