The WHSmith store in Tonbridge High Street is to close this summer. It means the High Street will be without a Post Office, which is currently housed in the WHSmith store.
The store will close at the end of July due to redevelopment plans drawn up by the landlord. Although the plans are only at an early stage, another retailer has already registered their interest in the site.
In a statement provided to KentLive, a Post Office spokesperson said: "The WHSmith store in Tonbridge, where Tonbridge Post Office is based, will be closing at the end of July owing to the landlord’s redevelopment plans. We know how important a Post Office is to a community.
"The vacancy had been advertised and we have an interested retailer. This is at the early stages.”
However, the thought of being left without a Post Office on the High Street has made many Tonbridge locals angry. Many took to a community Facebook group to express their views on the situation.
One person commented under a post speculating the news and said: "I hope this is false. I’m disabled and self employed, if there isn’t a post office in the high street then I’ll have to give up work because I won’t be able to send things to customers anymore!"
While another person wrote: "This is vital to the town I hope we will not lose it."
One other expressed their fury and said: "Tonbridge without a walk in post office!! Ridiculous!!!!"
It comes during a great deal of change for High Streets, with banks also closing a number of High Street sites in recent months. HSBC and Natwest became the latest to do so, closing their Gillingham, Herne Bay, Sidcup, Strood and Swanley branches.
