Since June 5 the town centre has not had a Post Office
The Post Office has been slated for its failure to set up new premises in Birkenhead town centre.
Since June 5, the town centre has been without a Post Office, putting pressure on nearby alternatives and depriving Birkenhead of a key service at a crucial time for the biggest town in Wirral.
Huge plans for Birkenhead, which include a new site for Birkenhead Market, a ‘super-crossing’ on Conway Street and top quality office space, are in the pipeline and could transform the town.
However, Green Party councillor Pat Cleary, who represents Birkenhead and Tranmere, worries about the impact not having a Post Office might have on the town centre.
He said: “From our point of view the Post Office is not doing enough to provide the conditions to allow someone to take it on with confidence.
“To have no Post Office branch in Wirral’s largest town is not acceptable. The Post Office needs to do more to rectify that.
“We have had soundings, but we need to see meat on the bones and a firm proposal to restore a Post Office to Birkenhead.”
Cllr Cleary said he was aware that the lack of a site in the town centre was putting pressure on the nearby Market Street Post Office, which has been very busy of late.
Looking at how the situation may be resolved, the Birkenhead and Tranmere councillor added: “We’ve got to have a Post Office in the town if it’s going to progress going forward.
“The council has done a lot of work, pro-actively looking at sites for Birkenhead Market.
“I hope the Post Office taps into that and sees if anything based on it can provide a unit going forward.”
It is understood that the Post Office is making progress on securing premises in the town centre, but has not yet finalised anything.

It is now more than two months since Birkenhead town centre last had a Post Office.
The Post Office did not want to comment further on the issue, however in June a spokesperson apologised for any inconvenience caused by the closure of Birkenhead Post Office.
They added: “This was due to the resignation of the operator and the closure of the store where the branch was based.
“In the interim alternative branches in the area include Birkenhead Hamilton Square and Oxton Village.”

Who would be a Sub Postmaster now with all what's going on with Horizon and as one Postmaster to me their profit have been screwed down to the point where the shop is the only thing making money and essentially subsidising the branch, not long after that conversation the branch closed down, I think they took a severance package amd left the business, I don't blame them.
