Edgware Road Post Office has become the first Post Office branch in the UK to receive a Fair Payment Code Gold Award, underlining the sector’s commitment to prompt, ethical payment practices.
The Fair Payment Code Awards recognise businesses that demonstrate best practice in paying suppliers, with the Gold Award reserved for organisations that pay suppliers within 30 days. Edgware Road Post Office is the first branch across the Post Office network to achieve Gold status.
Postmaster Dipesh Modha, who has run Edgware Road Post Office since 2016, is a long‑standing advocate of fair payment. He hopes the milestone will encourage more postmasters to apply for the Fair Payment Code, helping to build trust and stronger relationships with suppliers across the network.
The achievement highlights the vital role post offices play as community‑based small businesses, supporting local economies while demonstrating leadership in responsible business practices.
Speaking at this year’s Fair Payment Awards, where fair payment leaders were recognised by the secretary of state for business and trade, Peter Kyle, Modha said: “Fair payment is extremely important to me as a small business owner. It reflects respect, trust and strong relationships with suppliers and partners.
“As a Post Office serving the local community, we play a vital role in supporting people and businesses every day.”
“I joined the Fair Payment Code to demonstrate our commitment to doing business the right way, and I’m proud to be the first Post Office to receive the Gold Award. I believe many postmasters already follow ethical financial practices, and I strongly encourage others to apply.”
Emma Jones, small business commissioner, said: “Post Offices are at the centre of our communities – small businesses operating on high streets from the smallest villages to the biggest cities.
“Fair and timely payments help build trust and stability for small businesses, which is why I’m pleased that Edgware Road Post Office has become a Gold Fair Payment Code Awardee – and I hope it’s the first of many Post Offices to do so.”
