Birmingham Post Office scandal victim to return to family-run branch

A sub-postmaster who lost her Post Office branch after being wrongly accused of theft during the Horizon scandal is preparing to return to her family business.

Rooprit Gill – known as Roopie – ran the Wattville Road Post Office in Handsworth, Birmingham, which had been in her family for nearly five decades.

Her father bought the business in 1976 and then handed it down to her, but she was dismissed after becoming one of hundreds of sub-postmasters accused of theft or fraud because of the faulty Horizon IT system.

Ms Gill told ITV News Central that she wants to return to her branch "for [her] father more than anything else".

She continued: "My father ran a very successful business and unfortunately when I got dismissed, wrongly accused, I lost my job at the time.

"I just want to be back in there and show that I didn’t do it."

What does closure look like for victims of Post Office scandal?

Roopie had been a sub-postmaster for five years when she was suspended. She went to court facing charges of theft and false accounting, and was later removed from her role.

Her father has since passed away, and next year marks the 50th anniversary of him buying the business.

Now, she’s working daily in the convenience store behind the post office counter, waiting for the final step that will allow her to officially return.

"I’ve gone through all the interviews and everything," she said, before adding: "It should all be going through once I’ve had training. Hopefully, that’ll be in the middle of August."

If approved, she’ll be one of the first Horizon scandal victims to return to the same branch they once ran — a powerful symbol of resilience, and a quiet victory after years of injustice.

Good luck to her, letting your heart rule your head is not usually a good idea.

Personally I wouldn't touch it with a 100 feet barge pole while wearing a hazmat suit, I would push for maximum compensation and take the PO to the cleaners.
