I wrote the correct address on a parcel but the post office employee typed in the wrong postcode when they entered my parcel into the system

Post by Eliza-Lemon »

Hi everyone!

I’m currently experiencing the worst panic attack of my life because I stupidly sent an expensive item though Signed For First class mail last week Monday on the 25th January and have only noticed that on my receipt it shows that the post office employee wrote the wrong postcode. Instead of NR7 they wrote BR7 on the fist segment of the postcode which I can only guess is because the two letters are beside each other in the keypad.

This error wasn’t my fault but i am now dealing with the consequences of their mistake and a deepening fear that because I don’t have a “return to” address I may never see my parcel again.

Because it isn’t tracked the customer service at Royal Mail cant give me much information and I’m so nervous.

I understand and respect that our postal service is experiencing on of the worst backups in its history and are doing their best but is this time scale normal for them to fix an error of this nature?

Will they be able to fix an error of this nature? What action would you suggest I take to help the postal system fix this error? Is there action I can take against the post office or the post office employee who made this error so that they don’t put anyone else through this awful experience?

I would be so grateful for any and all help that could be provided

We go by what you, the customer, have written on the parcel, in particular town and postcode, not what the post office clerk has stuck on unless what you have written is ineligible... hope this allays your fears

I’m not completely up to date on the signed for product but I’m pretty sure you should also be able to use the track trace Royal Mail website to see if your item has been delivered... is there a long number on your receipt.

Bear in mind there are postal delays at the moment

Nothing to worry about. The receipt is proof of postage nothing else.

We, as delivery people have no access to that receipt and neither do the sorting machines, we go entirely off what it says on the parcel or letter as long as they are correct it should in 99.9% of cases arrive as addressed.

Thank you for the response. The post is signed for which means I only get updated when they post is delivered and the recipient signs as proof of collection. This means that until this takes place I have no idea where in the system my mail os and it’s making me worried cause it’s taking a suspiciously long time to arrive at the address. I sent my mum a package and she lives further away and in London where the bulk of delays are taking place yet her package arrived fine.

The representatives at the call centre haven’t been really useful either and keep staying that there’s nothing that they can do. It’s all just so worrying and I feel really daft for not getting a larger compensation.

Thank you for taking the time to respond and try to assure me. I just can’t help but worry and I really wish there was a way to speak to someone and confirm that the right address is being followed or at least ask for the parcel to be returned to me.

I’ve been keeping an eye out on the daily service reports and no delays have been mentioned in Norfolk which has me confused as to why it’s taking so long. I wish there was someone I could speak to there, maybe someone who worked in sorting or something, just for a bit of assurance

I have had exactly the same experience, I thought as my parcel had a tracking number they would be able to catch up with it and redirect it but no joy, I stupidly had not put my address on it anywhere, so can't even hope it will be returned, I just feel awful as I was returning a pet microchip scanner to the breeder of my puppy, as I found it in my car when I reached home. If I'd just sent it first class it would probably have been delivered a week ago, as I posted it 48hr tracked on the 1st October. It should have gone to Welshpool Powys but instead seems stuck in Southampton as SO21 was typed in instead of SY21!!!

Even though you did not put an address on the item, you can still claim and it ends up in the indeliverable section they may be able to match your description to the parcel and return it to you or forward it on.
