Item Retention

Post by lokixxx »

Hi, on friday I made 2 orders from 2 different companies within the UK, one was 48 tracked, the other 24 hour tracked. The 48 hour tracked was sent out that afternoon, and the 24 hour tracked was sent out saturday morning. I have kept my eye on tracking over the weekend, and both items status were changed at around 6am this morning stating that I shoulkd expect delivery today from Winchester DO. At 6:32pm today both tracking status changed to "Item Retention" with a message (the same on both) saying:

"We're holding this item at Winchester DO. We’ve received a request not to deliver mail to the property your item is addressed to today. We'll attempt delivery as per the instructions we’ve received, which is usually on the next working day."

My property is residential and there are no access issues my front door is literally the only door leading outside, I have a very loud bell and don't know of any reason that it couldn't be delivered today and I certainly didn'y request it not to be, any idea what's going on?

Cheers

I'd guess that the most likely reason is that the office ran out of either time or people to deliver your items. On top of social distancing restrictions within offices, the number of people off either sick or self-isolating is growing on a daily basis.

That's fair enough but they say on the tracking it can arrive up to 9pm, and if it wasn't even sent out I could have collected it this morning as they were open between 8-10 and the DO is literally 5 min drive. I just don't want this to be a reoccurance tomorrow id rather go collect the parcels tomorrow morning from the DO but customer support closed 30 min before the status update, it's just really frustrating.

On the tracking before the last status update both had delivery options, however now the "Choose a delivery option" button only exists on one of the parcels, and when I click and enter my postcode that it says "Sorry, no options are currently available for this parcel.", so I can't even ask to collect it tomorrow morning from there...

It is scanned as ready for delivery when it reaches the office. At that point it is unknown whether they will actually get it delivered, because they wouldn't know what duties would be delivered and/or how many people would be off.

You probably wouldn't have been able to collect them this morning as they wouldn't have been held in the area when collection items are kept. Likewise tomorrow it is unlikely that you would be able. If the office is very short staffed the collection point may even be closed in order to free up people to go on delivery. They were probably scanned in the evening because that was when someone was available to do it.

Where I work there will be around 20% less staff tomorrow because a load of posties have had a Track and Trace alert today. It has taken a while, but RM is being massively hit in the south now. Fully appreciate your frustration but Royal Mail is currently operating with lower staffing levels and almost unprecedented parcels levels.

Sorry, can't help regarding the different messages for delivery options as I have no experience of that side of things.

Can I ask, will they update the tracking to reflect whether it will be out on delivery tomorrow or is that all the tracking until it's delivered?

From what happens in my office, the whole process should/will be repeated tomorrow.

As they didn't go out today they should be a priority for tomorrow. Whether they are scanned as Ready for Delivery in the knowledge they may not go out, I honestly don't know. If they are scanned as Ready for Delivery I'd like to think they will go out, but cannot be certain.
