is bulk postage sent by car/van?

One day i had about 7 items posted to my house, about 4 were to big to fit in the post. but were not extemely heavy (3 were to be signed for, none were special delivery, all were items from abroad). On the same day the postman posted letters as normal.

On that day a van came to my house and posted the items having me sign for it.

Is this normal procedure that when there are too many items to deliver, it is posted by a van? and you get delivery from twice?

Bcause there was 1 time when i had 13 items & letters in total (about 7 items, 5 letters) posted to my house in 1 day and most fitted through the post.

All depends on the size of the items really. Anything too big to be bagged would be delivered via van.

I had a handful of DVD's posted through my letterbox. There was also a Sorry You Were Out card, although I assume that was posted at a different time by the van driver. I went to collect my packet from the D.O. and with it came another handful of DVD's. To me this is daft. The walking postman should have given everything to the van driver. It just goes to show you can never tell when you will have something delivered, or by whom.

Pre park and loop, as a walker, I would check the big parcels that the driver was taking for me, and if I had any smaller ones I'd put them together, so only one of us delivered packets to that address that day. Not everyone does this, I don't know why. In fact, when I first started, I put letters with the oversize packets as well, but was soon told not to do this. I thought (and still think) that it's daft two postman going the the same address in one day.

We now have park and loop, so we take out all packets, regardless of size. The person (usually the driver) who takes the packets, also takes the letters for that address.

By the way, I live in a different area to my workplace D.O.

He would cover two walks, and each one had its own York, so I just needed to check the one York. It was never much more than half full. On busy days I'd either have a quick look and hope I got lucky spotting certain addresses, or I'd make a list of the packets I had that weren't easy and try to match them up with larger parcels in the York. 5 minutes work often worth it.

There is good news and bad news if you hate post being delivered twice.

Good News - Royal Mail are rolling out these style of deliveries across the country and eventually everyone will be served by either a Postie with a large trolley (HCT) or by 2 in a van,

Bad News - Private companies are just entering the final mile side of the market - so in future its entireley possible you could get multiple deliveries by multiple companies, but worse on less days of the week.


Your postie may or may not know when these deliveries are due to be introduced as, even though they are meant to be in by 2013, the current pace of introduction may mean some not being started till 2014 or even later.

what do you mean by "final mile side of the market " , how will these private companies affect items i get delivered (i dont live in rural area)

The final mile is the term used by the industry but it bascially means actually delivering the letters and packets, it does not mean the actual last mile itself.

At present in the UK only Royal Mail do it on a national basis, TNT do it on a local basis in limited areas of London but are saying they are looking to expand.
