Deceased Persons Post Office Card A/C

Post by BB39 »

Good Morning

Hopefully someone will be able to offer some advice please. A relative died a couple of months ago and as executor I successfully gained access to their funds in their Post Office Card Account, received a final statement an the account was closed no problem (the deceased left no estate, no will so there is no probate etc). I have since received a couple of cheques made payable to "The executor of ................." I called the companies who issued the cheques and they told me to take them to the deceased bank who would give me cash for them.

My question is how can I pay these cheques into the deceased's account if it has been closed? Do I take these cheques to a PO counter with all the paperwork from closing the account and see if they can assist?

I have called Customer Services and explained the situation, they were clueless, incompassionate and they had no idea or advice on what I should do.

Any advice would be most welcome. Many thanks in advance.

Didn't they already state that if you take them to the bank you would get cash. No need to pay into account, just need to show that you are the executor of the estate and that the account was held there I think

I was executor for my aunt. I had a few similar cheques, and easily paid them into my own bank account. The first time I showed them my certificate (can't remember what it's called, but I got it to show that I was legally the executor) then after that they didn't ask and I didn't show. I probably didn't need to show it the first time.

If I was you I'd just take the cheques to my own bank and pay them in to my own account.
