Junk Mail

Post by simosimpson »

What is it with junk mail. I am having a real battle with my local sorting office. No matter how many time I 'opt out' the manager insists that everyone receives the junk. It's so serious that I wrote and told my local sorting manager to stop the deliveries to our home. Today he sent postie back saying that by law they had to post it. I forget what time my banana boat arrived. I am so mad I have had to lodge a formal complaint with head office!. How can we have sympathy with the strikers when there are managers like this in the sorting offices? Wht hould I be subjected to all this junk?

Hello i am postman the manager has no power what junk mail you receive you need to take it up with the people who are sending you the junk. Royal Mail only delivery what they are paid for by law the manager is right he has to clear the office or he is done for wilful delay of mail.

Even though you have 'opted out'. According to Head Office sorting offices should respect customers wishes not to post unwanted UNADDRESSED mail. How would you like it i I dumped hundreds of my advertising leaflettes through his box each year.

there maybe some confusion
yes customers can opt out of receiving what we call door to door items "junk mail" this is usually sainsbury leaflets etc, we deliver usually 3 of these items a week, these are not addressed items but are delivered to all houses on our round as long as they don't opt out

People can opt out of getting these items and the best way would be to contact customer services
i have people on my round that have opted out of door 2 door items, they just don't get them now, as regards the manager either he doesn't know what he's doing [no surprise it is RM] or both you and him are getting mixed up with what can be stopped.
When stopping none addressed junk mail we can only stop what we deliver and addressed mail must be delivered
hope that is a bit clearer for you

best bet would be to phone customer services and they will be able to help
08457 740 740 customer services numb

Why waste resources. Surely post men are paid a wage to post letters. This sort of mindless paper pushing is demorallising to the postal staff. The next thing that your boss's will be asked of you is to carry an A Board.! What happened to the postmans pride? The public are starting to think that you are a free ads poster not a POST PERSON who once had pride in his work. For years I knew my postie and held him in high esteem. He had a regular round, he prided himself on knowing everyone and the customer in return [if he was good, as most were] looked forward to seeing him and getting a familiar nod or wave with the odd 'good morning' as he walked by. Every Christmas as a result we would give him a £10 quid. Millions of people don't want all this crap on their mat. I intend to encourage everyone I know to bung all the rubbish back in their nearest box that way you will have to handle the rubbish twice. I now do this. Roll on the competition.

Thanks Macfan. Unfortunately it's our local manager. Customer Services are handling this now because the local manager sent Postie back to our door with the message that 'I don't care who has opted out everyone is going to get the junk mail. Yes I am angry as it'splonkers like him who are making your job harder. This year there will be no tenners for postie thats for sure.

As had been said earlier, we only deliver 3 leaflets a week, but people on my round usually end up with a dozen or so, mainly from local takeways etc, that they deliver themselves. We're not the only ones filling peoples letterboxes with junk, at least with us, the opt-out is usually adhered to.

tenners for the postie, well he's only doing what the manager tells him to do really
i know when i get a xmas tip it's always really appreciated, thank you and sorry to hear of all of the trouble when it could have been easily sorted

The Mailing Preference Service can stop junk mail (i.e. companies sending you further offers) but it does take some time.
The design, printing and distribution of mail can take upto 6 weeks so the mail is effectively already on its way and this can't be stopped. Any boxes you tick after that (e.g. on crossword entries from magazines) do not apply to the current 'opt out' as you 'asked' for them afresh

Royal mail have to deliver anything with your address on it (including stupid things like Mr Deleted, 1 The Street etc). We do not deliver to people but to addresses, it isn't really any of our business whom it is addressed to or whether you asked for it or not.

The only items Royal Mail can stop are out Door 2 Door items which usually consist of pizza leaflets etc. Personallly, I put mine back in the postbox with the rest of the mail I return to sender (cross adddress out and put refused or not known or gone away on it)

Look, it's not the fault of your postman that you recieve junkmail, it's the morons who send out the rubbish in the first place, then it's capitalist prawns like Adam Crozier who simply cannot resist the £ signs unbelievably generated by such garbage. If given the choice, most postmen and postwomen would refuse to deliver the cack, but hard as it might be to believe, if a postman didn't deliver the pizza or mobile phone leaflets forced on him/her, they could get the sack, yes, that's what I said, a postman could lose their livelihood for failing to deliver pizza hut guff, virgin media trash, and all the other rubbish we get forced on us every week.
If you want to have a go at somebody about junkmail, go to the companies named on the leaflets, then go to Adam Crozier, but please do not give your poor put-upon postie any earache over it.
Thankyou.

You can Op out - Print this off and send it to the manager if you have followed the procedure - if not then please reapply.

PS: Your Postie receives between 1.67p and 4p for each leaflet and usually has a maximum of 3 to deliver - and we don't do all leaflets, in facts its one of the bane's of our jobs following these leaflets round when they don't post them properly.

Door to Door
Opting out

If you want to stop receiving unaddressed mail delivered by Royal Mail to your home you can do so by contacting us at the address below. However, there are a few things you should consider before doing this:

1. The opt out service only relates to unaddressed mail. Royal Mail is still legally obliged to deliver all addressed mail, which includes mail that is addressed “To the Occupier” (or with any other generic recipient information), as well as mail that is personally addressed to you by name.

2. It is not possible for Royal Mail to separate material you don’t want from material that you do want, such as advertising offers or leaflets from Central and Local Government and other public bodies. Opting out from Royal Mail Door to Door stops all unaddressed items from being delivered by us (although we would work with Government to get a message to every UK address in exceptional circumstances). Election material is not delivered by the Door to Door service and is therefore not affected by this opt out.

3. Opting out means no one at the address will receive unaddressed mail items - is this acceptable to everyone living at the property?

4. Please be aware that Royal Mail only delivers about 25% of the total volume of unaddressed mail items in the United Kingdom. The opt out will not cover any other distributors, who will continue to deliver unaddressed mail items. Opting out of Royal Mail Door to Door deliveries will not necessarily reduce by a significant amount of the number of items that you will receive, as there are other carriers in the market place.

5. If you would like to stop any other unwanted communications please visit http://www.mydm.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; which provides details on all other preference services, or call 0845 703 4599.

If you wish to opt out of receiving Door to Door mail items, please send or email your name and address to the address below:

Freepost RRBT-ZBXB-TTTS
Royal Mail Door to Door Opt Outs
Kingsmead House
Oxpens Road
OXFORD
OX1 1RX

or email: optout@royalmail.com

We will then send an opt-out form to your address, which you must sign and return. We do this for security reasons - to verify that those resident at the address have requested the ‘opt out’.

Once you’ve returned this form, Royal Mail will stop delivering unaddressed items to your address within 6 weeks.
