From what I can read, Fmrpostie is complaining that RM couldn't deliver on the service that he paid for and not on what individual posties can or can't do, so don't take it personally. To me it sounds like the DOM has decided that he doesn't have to send out the specials because RM have removed the guarantees on them and he's using this to clear up other work (we all know that DOMs will use any little thing to justify their cutting of budgets) and not one or two posties deciding it was too dangerous to actually deliver them.

PS. To the NI customer, I can't see why your special can't be delivered because I'm also from NI (just outside Belfast) and we've been getting all our SDs and delivering them (only a few households have had their deliveries stopped because of the weather).

fmrPOSTIE - This is only my opinion but I think you are being unreasonable in what you expect and are only looking at the situation as a disgruntled individual. You are not looking at the situation as a whole and and therefore you believe that the requests your are making or the tasks you expect others to do is reasonable when in fact the opposite is true.

Just my opinion of course.

Yes I think its unreasonable for you to expect YOUR SD to arrive when everyone else has been suspended.
Yes I think its unreasonable for you to equate your single journey to the DO and extrapolate conditions across the rest of the DOs area.
Yes I think its unreasonable for a "teenager" to be expected to search over 800 SDs in another part of the DO for your SD if he has been instructed he/she can't leave the callers office (as mine have been so instructed), or they are in the process of sorting them in a different part of the office (how would they know how long it would take).

The only reasonable thing you have done is contact Customer Care but I am sorry if you expect sympathy, understanding or help on here, but the way you started off this thread, did not really lend to anyone doing so.

Pehaps you could not get your item is because some of the staff could'nt get into work and the ones that did turn up did'nt have the knowledge of dealing with the Specials. I think you are selfish, we are all trying to do our best in the current situation and all you go on about is 'Me, me, me!'

Its the doms decision not to prioritise those specials for sorting and not indivuduals. As someone said hes got a get out clause as theyre not now guarenteed. I understand your frustration but as a former postie im sure it will be sorted very quickly now you have phone contact with office. Its not just the roads, they look fine but you try walking some of these pavements especially the ones at an angle, its taking twice as long to do half a delivery at the moment. You must know as a former postie that RM will have to pay compo to the sender and that there are so many cuts that we dont achieve 1pm specials regularly but it seems customers do not complain enough to get their money back. Dont shoot the messengers. Make a nuisance of yourself and youll get it before the other799 people.

you cant pick it up because royal mail is a delivery company and not a collection service, you can only collect if the delivery service cannot get an answer from your door step. Im sorry but that is the proceedure if they let you pick it up then they have to let everyone pick up their parcels too and where do you draw the line? It has to be sorted to the postmans walk. You may however find that some offices might let you have gone and collect it but i suppose that will vary from office to office. Just remember you are not looking at it from the people insides point of view, if they person had given you the special item he could have got in big trouble and would you want to see somebody lose their job through your impatience??

From my own experience, mail seems to have been delayed in the RH postcode by about 2 weeks. For example - I ordered two things from Play; one sent to my work address in the City, the other home (RH). The City delivery took place 2 days later, no sign of the other item....! Plus items I ordered online before the New Year are only just starting to arrive....

It does seem odd that no deliveries are taking place due to dangerous conditions, and yet I walk on those very same "icy, dangerous pavements" to collect my own mail (and credit where it's due, collecting my mail has been very straightforward) and go to work......

Don't get me wrong, I see the staff at the delivery office working their backsides off and I have no issues (heck, I'm getting my mail after all) but I wonder if there is an element of 'swinging the lead' here?

Anyway I was just wondering, who makes the decision for the post not to be delivered - I guess it is made locally by the manager? It must be very difficult to risk assess how icy the pavements are.....

How long do you 'walk' for on icy pavements? Are you walking constantly for 4 hours? Are you carrying a bag weighing up to 16 kgs? Are you having to avoid obstacles?

About a mile, maybe just over. Same distance as it is from the Delivery Office to where I live, because the Delivery Office is behind the railway station.

Only at weekends. It takes me about 20 minutes to walk there (to the Delivery office from my flat).

22Lbs (10Kgs) at the weekend. 2-3Kgs morning and evening depending on if I bring my laptop. (Originally I had written 22Kgs which is not the case at all!)

No, and nor is the postman, who does a blinding job and comes out in all weathers usually, well above and beyond the call of duty if you ask me. I believe he delivers only to the development I live on.

Whilst your support for your collegaues is admirable, my main gripe is the chronic lack of communication to the customers and when we do get information, it is wildly conflicting. I was told this morning by the manager that no deliveries were taking place, yet the website says they are. Another resident of the development called at lunchtime and was then told deliveries ARE taking place. When the website stated deliveries should have been made normally, they weren't (last week).

" Item FDXXXXXXXX4GB could not be delivered on 2010-01-07 as the address was inaccessible. It is being held at Portsmouth DO pending collection/redelivery instructions from the addressee."

Portsmouth DO are saying they havent got the package and do not hold RM Tracked packages anyway, can this be true? Thanks.

tracked items are held like any other package
if its tracks as held there then thats who has it(your local office?)
you know tracked isnt special delivery?

If it was scanned as inaccessible then yes it should be at the local d/o

as they only get scanned in when they arrive

to be scanned as inaccessible it must have arrived if not it would simply say it was progresing through the network

whether they have dealt with it or it is in a big backlog is another matter

I don't know the way this particular d/o deals with tracked only the way mine does

either way as i'm sure you know the counter staff have alot to deal with

I suggest calling the office before you leave home explaining the situation to them ( with the fact that it must be there to be traced as inaccessible) and someone may go dig it out for you
