Welcome to the mad world of being a postie. Its rewarding yet frustrating, challenging yet easy enough, you have to think on your feet but follow strict guidelines.

Best thing is to go in with an open mind and expect to be confused for a few days, however check out this thread for some useful pointers http://www.royalmailchat.co.uk/communit ... =1&t=27513" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; but most won't make sense for a few days.

Welcome.

You'll get a high vis vest so the public know you have not nicked the post. You might get a waterproof coat if they have spare.

Ideally wear anything thats lose, warm and waterproof - don't wear denim or Jeans you'll be walking like a cowgirl after a mile or so. Try and get a cap with a peak, it shades your eyes in sunlight and keeps the rain off as well. Shoes -anything that has good support - not plimsolls.

Perhaps - ideally though you will paired up with someone for the first few days. However a good A-Z of the local area is always useful - or Google maps/Street View if you have an Android phone.

Ok, I'm being sent to different depots anyway, so I guess I'll have to build up an achieve of the area. Am I panicking for no reason? They won't just leave me to it on my first day would they?

No, everybody is nervous on their first day but we're a decent bunch and it won't be anything near as bad as you think. Beware the coffee machine though, that stuff is vile...but strangely addictive.
