What to wear on the first day
Hi,I've just been looking through all the info I've received but can't find anything about what to wear for the first few weeks. I've got a form to order uniform but I can't do this until I've been there for 6 weeks. I know they'll probably tell us at the induction tomorrow but I wanted to know asap so I can everything ready for when I start on Thursday. Cheers.

Wear stuff that is warm and comfortable.
Don't wear anything expensive because delivery is brutal and your clothes will get ruined.
And wear 2 pairs of socks because it cushions the knee joints a little bit more.

The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Shoes/Boots - anything with good ankle support.
Trousers - Combats rather than Denim - denim is terrible to work in when wet.
waterproofs such as cagoules and leggings are a good idea when its forecast to rain.
Tops - anything as long as its warm and lets air flow. But no political, corporate messages or of garish design.

Re: What to wear on the first day
How long is your contract for barbel?
If its for 3 months or less they won't give you any uniform except a high vis. If its for longer than 3 months they let me order the uniform straight away.
If it is more than 3 months give the uniform line a call when you start. All they can do is say no!

Re: What to wear on the first day
My contract is for 6 months femalepostie. I will give them a ring and try and order it after my first day. I just remember the guy who interviewed me saying that they don't let you order straight away because many people don't get through the first week. I will give it a go though, don't really fancy going out buying new tops and trousers if I can help it.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: What to wear on the first day
Well it's a bit strange that someone interviewing a job hunter would say that.
So where was it then,a mail centre a delivery office, wherever?
PM me details in confidence if you want.

Re: What to wear on the first day
Definitely call after your induction then. If you have a nice operator like I did she ordered me the full uniform instead of just the basics.Barbel wrote:My contract is for 6 months femalepostie. What should happen is straight away you get the basics of tops, trousers and kagool. Then after 6 weeks you can order the rest of your uniform so stormproof coat, waterproof trousers and other stuff. Nice lady on the phone ordered the full works and it arrived in DO in about 4 working days.
DO NOT get your manager to do it. They don't know how to do it properly and it will never arrive. Call the number on the form and order it yourself.

Re: What to wear on the first day
To be honest It didn't bother me when he said that to me, I just thought maybe it's because people don't realise what hard work it is and just can't hack it? Even my own family don't seem to think I'm going to last more than a week and haven't been at all supportive or encouraging. Makes me all the more determined I will stick to it to prove them wrong.
Yes femalepostie I'll give the order line a call tomorrow when I get back from the induction if I have time. How long does the induction usually go on for? I also have to travel 50 miles so I might not get back in time if it doesn't finish until late.

Re: What to wear on the first day
Thanks for the links fish and very nice too! I'm liking the red very much, my favourite colour! I already have my pay number which is on my contract so I will have a good look through tomorrow and have a go at ordering online.
