Newbie Postie

Post by muzzy »

Hi all

Started as a postie last week, had training day in Bristol on Thursday and started the job Friday - Saturday.
Really enjoying it already, it has helped by having a good co-worker showing me the ropes for 2 days.

Couple of questions if I may,
I drove a round trip of 94 miles to the training day, am I entitled to petrol money for this? I don't really want to go asking my new manager for money for this if i'm not entitled to it as i've only been in the job 2 days!

Secondly, I'm contracted for 28 hours, I imagine I'll be doing more than that until I'm up to speed, in fact the guy that was doing the round I'm on is contracted for 30 and said he usually takes about 6.5 to 7 hrs a day, so 32.5 to 35 a week. What's the score here, will I be paid for the hours I clock in and out or only for 28? I'm on a 8 month contract and have been out of work for 2 months, so obviously I don't want to rock the boat in my first week by complaining i'm doing more hours than getting paid for.

thanks

make sure you claim pressure overtime every day you go over your hours -there willbe a 'PressureOvertime' sheet in your managers office that you have to fill in and that he or she has to approve . Dont rely on the daily signing in sheet . You have to claim this - especially at first ; you won't be rocking the boat , you are fully entitled to be paid for the exact amount of time you are there and your Manager will know this and understand especially with you being new . Join the union immediatly and talk to your union rep about this -that's what they're there for . Managers wont do you any favours - you have to look after number one ..
As for the induction day travel cost refund I'm afraid you have already missed the boat there - refunds are made on the day ( they may well have kept quiet about that one too ) ( they never offer anything - you always have to ask .... )

Ask to claim the T&S for your induction day through one of the line managers. You should get £37.60.

Thanks for the replies.
I did ask at the induction day about fuel costs and they said speak to your manager as it seems to vary from one DO to another as to whether you get paid it.

Today was my 3rd day and was accompanied by a "coach". I'm off tomorrow then on my own from Wednesday, I've been happy with the level of training so far, so confident I know what I'm doing, just want my uniform now, surprised I've not been given an ID badge yet despite mentioning it on my 1st day

Please do not be surprised at anything you see or hear. You are with a strange beast now. My advice to you is to stay away from the negative thinkers and just get on with your job. If you find you are struggling seek help from others. Join the union, but keep your own mind. Stay positive. There is a future with RM, trouble is no one knows what it will be like!!!! Regards

wise words indeed.

well today was my first day out alone, and the amount of mail we had today was mahoosive!
I ended up with 7 bags each 12-14kg as oppose to the usual 5 bags.
It makes me wonder if the guy doing my round yesterday actually delivered all the parcels as there were shed loads.
I ended up doing 2.5 hours over, I shall speak with the manager in the morning to see if he is going to pay me, coz i cant go on doing 2 hours a day for no pay, hopefully today was just exceptional.
It was nice to be told from a couple of guys (coach and a postie) that id done well today, kind of made my hard graft and sweat worthwhile, and I got a sense of satisfaction knowing i completed the round properly and everyone got their mail today, allbeit a bit late for those at the end of the round!

Maybe there is something wrong with the photos they take of you? :whistle
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.
