FUKUSHIMA -- A postman in northeastern Japan hid some 6,000 pieces of undelivered mail between 2015 and 2020, the Tohoku branch of Japan Post Co. announced on May 1.

The postman, an acting deputy manager in his 40s at the Shirakawa Post Office in Shirakawa, Fukushima Prefecture, has apparently admitted to hiding the mail.

According to the branch office in Sendai, the man hid some 2,000 pieces of standard mail and about 4,000 pieces of express Yu-Mail in his home and car between July 2015 and April this year. On April 28, the head of the Shirakawa office's postal department found a large quantity of undelivered correspondence in the man's car, sparking an internal investigation.

The Tohoku branch office submitted a complaint to local police on April 30, alleging violations of the Postal Act. The office will apologize to senders and receivers of the items and deliver all of them.

"We are sorry for the trouble. We will thoroughly instruct employees on their duties," the branch office commented.
