UK shoppers want fast and flexible deliveries

British consumers are demanding both more flexibility and faster delivery times from online retailers and delivery couriers, according to new research from Whistl.

The Whistl study found that a third of UK shoppers are “still happy to receive their orders within two to three days” and over a quarter are willing to wait a week to receive their shopping. However, 12% must have their purchases by the next day and 7% “want same day delivery and nothing else”.

According to Whistl: “Women are happier, 91 hours on average, to wait longer for their deliveries compared to 89 hours for men. Those under 24 are the most impatient, with only 16% saying they were happy to wait a week for delivery, compared to 38% of over 65s.”

The study revealed some interesting regional variations.

“London is all about instant deliveries with 10% looking for same day delivery, opposed to Belfast and Dublin not caring about same day delivery at all,” said Whistl. “Overall Birmingham, closely followed by London and Liverpool, are the most impatient, with the lowest average expected delivery of 3.3 days. Compared to the most relaxed city, Nottingham, where they are willing to wait an average of 4.7 days for a delivery.”

Melanie Darvall, Director of Marketing & Communications at Whistl, said: “With the rise of online shopping we are seeing a greater demand for same and next day delivery to fit in with the lifestyle needs of consumers. This is driving a fundamental change in the speed and flexibility of services from delivery providers and they will have to continue to evolve to satisfy retailers who must respond to their customer’s needs.”

Of course, it is no great surprise that people prefer their parcels to be delivered quickly and that they would like the delivery window to fit in with their own schedules. But the big questions are: are they prepared to pay for the extra convenience and/or speed; and will the availability of more delivery options influence their buying decisions?

This is the problem, because peeps want it and retailers want it some f****r has to deliver it as cheaply as possible, hence the courier bollox we have now.
I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

f**k all that bow lax, the real question is who is happy to sit in and wait all day up till 21:55 (personal experience).
Track your delivery says "out for delivery", said that since 07:30 this morning, must be here soon its nearly 14:00.
Crickey cant still be out its 17:00.
Well the track says "out for delivery" but its 19:30 that's well over a 12 hour day.
Check site again, site info says delivered by 21:00, sounds like a 14 hour day.
Turns up at 21:55 i said the site says by 21:00 mate, he says you don't want, and gets in his van and leaves.

Quite clear the questions were designed to elicit certain responses, why not ask "are you ok with spending your entire morning, daytime, evening and nighttime waiting for a parcel or packet, you know from 07:00 - 22:00.

They've tried to get two blokes in our office to start / finish later, a kind of hybrid duty with parcels. They didn't bite, but after the dispute is sorted, I can see this being the norm for some staff. Ok if you don't mind, but a big issue if you're not happy with it.

we already have a few hybrid duties, half time on delivery then half on collection with an MR in the middle, all mon-fri with saturday off.
The holders main concern was mon-fri attendances.
Deliveries not very time consuming either, due to the time critical nature of the collection work.

Ours didn't have the Monday to Friday bait. Usual five day over six attendance, so not really appealing, other than a bit less delivery work.
