Around 15 former workers held a protest outside the firm’s Rotherham depot, setting company uniforms alight after pinning them to the gates of the site at Bradmarsh Business Park.

Of the 34 Rotherham workers, 31 have been made immediately redundant, with three retained to assist with winding down operations.

But many at Friday’s protest, which was organised by the RMT union, were self-employed drivers used on a contracted basis who are not included in the official redundancy figures.

Drivers said they had worked for City Link for years but were ‘forced’ to become self-employed two years ago. They said the business failure will hit around 15 to 20 self-employed drivers in South Yorkshire.

He said: “They let us work all Christmas knowing they had no intention of paying us. I have got no livelihood and no money coming in.”

Andrew Hall, 42, from Kimberworth, said his wife gave birth to their fourth child just before Christmas and he is owed between £2,500 and £3,000.

“I feel angry about what they have done to us. They had us working 15 to 16 hours a day knowing we weren’t going to get paid.”

Administrators say the business, owned by Better Capital, had closed after making ‘substantial losses’.

I wonder if the 3 were chosen on seniority?
The societies of consumption and squandering of material resources are incompatible with the idea of economic growth and a clean planet.

Doesn't really matter they were all treated shabbily and will be on benefits including the 3 who at least had time to prepare for their inevitable unemployment.
