TNT Posties trial delivery by electric unicycle

The UK's second-biggest delivery group TNT Post, re-naming itself as "whistl", experiments with device to speed up service

The technology is being trialled in three cities

The days of the postman weaving through traffic on his pushbike are numbered, according to the UK's second-biggest delivery company.

TNT Post has begun training staff in use of the AirWheel, an electric unicycle with a top speed of 12mph and a 20-mile range.

It says it plans to roll the technology out if a trial with 100 posties in London, Manchester, Birmingham and Liverpool is successful.

The AirWheel, a contraption with two steps and an internal balancing mechanism, is legally allowed to travel on pavements and other pedestrian routes.

The device, which comes at a cost of between £510 and £800 each, re-charges when travelling downhill.

The trial was announced as TNT Post, which has been a thorn in the side of Royal Mail since it began delivering in 2012, re-named itself as "whistl".

"We are committed to ongoing efficiency and if the trial proves successful then the AirWheel will be adopted by whistl Posties across the UK," said its chief executive Nick Wells.

The group, which currently employs around 3,000 delivery workers in the UK, has ambitions for a nationwide network of 20,000 posties in five years' time.

However, it faces a legal challenge from Royal Mail, which claims its practice of "cherry-picking" the most lucrative and concentrated delivery locations puts the Universal Service Obligation at risk.

Whether the AirWheel will strike a blow to Amazon's plans to deliver by drone, meanwhile, is another matter.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

Liked the office bit - I can just see them wheeling through Tesco to the service desk to drop the mail off - but really, I can't imagine any sensible business allowing one of those over the doorstep.

This is laughable, the guy has nothing in his bag. Their is no way this could be operated safely while having a full bag of post on your shoulder. At least the bike took the weight of the post, off your shoulders. And you could literally deliver one parcel at a time on this thing going backwards and forwards to the delivery office to pick up another parcel. Along with changing the name of a well known well established company like TNT, this unicycle is also a bad idea. And its funny that this silly idea appears the same time as the name change. Media coverage to help get the new name out there maybe? Image

Postie's use AirWheel for Deliveries

Post by llcoolh »

You might have seen our friendly posties trialling our latest delivery device, the AirWheel.
If the sound of an Electric Unicycle sounds crazy then you’re right, it is a little crazy! The AirWheel might be a bit of an unusual means of delivering letters and parcels but we already love them. The AirWheel is environmentally friendly, economical, practical, and above all, fun! - See more at: http://www.whistl.co.uk/news/posties-us ... vDUiJ.dpuf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

They can only carry one item at a time in case the address is up the top of some flats with no lift. Then they have to carry the bastard thing up with them or else kill yourself hopping up to the top with no margin for error!. Is this an April fool>
