A brand new local postal service for the Wisbech area has been launched this week by local family-run newspaper delivery firm Webbs of Leverington.
Webbs Postal Service guarantees next day delivery to 19 villages as far afield as Tydd Four Gotes, Walsoken and Gorefield and all for the price of just 30p per item.
Initially the service, which launched on Monday is available to Webbs newspaper and magazine delivery customers.
Brian Webb, who runs Webbs of Leverington, said: “We’ve been delivering people’s newspapers and magazines for 50 years now we can deliver their post too.”
Mr Webb said the postal service, which is half the price of Royal Mail and operates seven days a week, will complement the newspaper and magazine deliveries.
“We operate 12 vans with 16 members of staff taking people’s newspaper and magazine orders out every day including Sundays to 19 villages, and so it is no hardship to take a few letters and cards out to those places at the same time,” said Brian.
“As long as people are a customer of ours then they can use the postal service, even if they only have one paper or magazine a week. We think it is an extra service and we hope people will make use of it,” said Brian.
The service is registered with Ofcom and is also insured.
Brian added: “We know that a lot of local people prefer to use the post rather than go on-line, and we also believe that a lot of local businesses will be attracted by our great value for money service.”
This is only the second service of its kind in the country, the first being in the Somerset town of Wellington.
Brian Webb commented: “I saw the story about the newsagent in Somerset before Christmas, and thought it was a great idea. It has gone from strength to strength down there and we think it will prove just as popular here. This kind of postal service is well suited to rural areas like ours.”
The service covers all of Wisbech and 19 villages, including Sutton St James, the Tydds, Waltons, Walpoles, plus Elm and Emneth. For a full list of villages covered, see http://www.webbsofleverington.co.uk" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;, and for more information, including how to buy stamps (which are sold in £3 batches), contact Webbs on 0800-0509838.
Webbs of Leverington is a family business which has been in the home news delivery (HND) business since the 1950s. It now has 46 delivery runs making it one of the largest HND newsagents in the country.
Brian Webb has been instrumental in setting up the Home News Delivery Affiliation, a national body working to protect home news delivery at a time when the newstrade is facing tough competition on-line.
