Hermes launches Sunday delivery
Tuesday, February 4th, 2014
Hermes, the UK delivery company, is launching a Sunday delivery service to provide added convenience and choice for customers. It is the first consumer delivery company to offer its retail customers a 7- day service.

The Sunday service will initially be available as a next day service, with customers able to order all day Saturday for a Sunday delivery and will be fully tracked.

Carole Woodhead, CEO at Hermes UK, said: “The retail sector has been trading 7 days a week for a long time now and by introducing this service we are giving online shoppers the same service. We recently commissioned some independent research that found that two thirds of online shoppers found Sunday deliveries appealing. Quite simply it fits around their increasingly busy lifestyles and is often a day they can guarantee being at home. As a result we believe our newSunday service will increase the first time delivery success rate and overall customer satisfaction.”

This announcement is just one of the new service initiatives that Hermes has planned to help give its retail clients a competitive edge by providing high levels of service and added convenience for consumers. This includes the opening of a brand new £6m call centre in Leeds and the growth of its myHermes ParcelShop network which now totals 3,500 and will increase to 5,000 in 2014.

I have no doubt Royal Mail will be following up with their own Sunday service possibly done with a mix of part time and overtime.

Nice to see customers being given the chance to have parcels fail to turn up on a whole new day of the week.
As far as RM doing it on a Sunday, especially on OT, can't see many people up for that.

Those carriers that do not adjust their services in line with customer requirements will lose market share quickly. eCommerce will be the main driver and the service will be based on fast, reliable services spanning an ever wider delivery span in terms of time and day. Customers won't be too interested in aligning their fulfilment services with the duty structures of local DOs when they can move their custom elsewhere. RM has a good name and logistics network to rely upon but there will be no standing still.

I completely agree. However we are unfortunately very poor at giving customers what they want rather we do things our way and tell customers its tough if they don't like our way. This might have worked in the past but the market is far too competitive for this to be able to continue. Given how much more we get paid than those who work for our competitors RM will never be able to compete on price and our only chance is to compete on service. Far too many of our staff (posties and managers) just don't give a **** :(

No eCommerce wants cheap service, any thing else comes as a bonus, reliability doesn't come into it, if it did Yodel and hermes would have gone out of business years ago.

Indeed, when we had Saturday overtime rate which is more than the mid week rate (remember them ?) you could get it covered no problem, when we went to single rate there was no incentive to do it, consequently take up was low unless you really needed the money, otherwise why give up your day off for it, if they augmented overtime rate for Saturday and Sunday, you will have quite a few volunteers willing to do it.

In the eCommerce market in our favour we have the logistics and workforce, if we do nothing about this we will lose out and jobs will be lost. leisure time is no use without the money to pay for it.
