TNT
So as most of you are aware, bang on time with the Royal Mail privatization... The rapidly expanding, recorded-delivery-as-standard, healthier Dutch company: TNT, have pounced at the opportunity to inevitably become the #1 E2E/final mile delivery service in England...
There seems to be a bit of hostility from Royal Mail posties towards TNT posties as they've been out training on their bikes, opening DU's and such...
Of course, it's just competition (between the companies), but is there really any need for competition between the frontline posties?
How does it benefit you to sit there and call TNT posties parasites and scumbags? Questioning their nerve to "step foot in the post office" in one such case"?
The Royal Mail (previously, the government) have obviously mistreated / ill-considered the well-being of Royal Mail posties, who can blame TNT for simply seizing a failsafe, lucrative business opportunity?
I'll be taking up the black and orange and establishing my rounds as a TNT postie in November, and to be fair I feel honoured and thankful towards TNT...
Personally I never cared what uniform the guy posting my letters was wearing, and I feel the same way now...
The way I see it is with the rigorous checks and requirements set to be employed by Royal Mail, they never would have given me a permanent full time job (in this day and age where people are lucky to have such a job)... never in a million years would Royal Mail have given me such an opportunity.
British vs Dutch... well what has Britain ever done for me? I used to be the most patriotic guy you'd meet, but let's be honest this country has gone Pete Tong left, right and center... don't give me the "British business over Foreign business" malarki... as another Royal Mail postie did elsewhere on the internet... when a British company does me a favor and gives me an opportunity then I'll show appreciation, but until then... I'll be more than thankful towards the Dutch company who welcomed me with open arms to give me a chance despite my less than appatising background and work history.
I sincerely hope Royal Mail stays above water in the coming years, I hope everybody is able to keep their jobs...
I knew TNT were coming to Manchester MONTHS ago, way before it was pressed late last month due to the leak of the very loosely kept "secret"... and I'll hint at something else, London, Manchester... tip of the iceberg.

Re: TNT
If you mean financially healthier, then you are sadly very misinformed. They are cutting back on services around the world, and closing up in some countries. They were offered the chance to buy Royal Mail, and refused on the grounds that they couldn't afford it, even though it was at a vastly reduced price, less than what it has just been sold for.BlackAndOrange wrote:So as most of you are aware, bang on time with the Royal Mail privatization... Also won't happen. Especially not on the same terms as Royal Mail operate. And it will only occur in big cities and towns. TNT do not have to operate under the constraints that RM do, but hopefully, if they keep up their expansion, the regulator will apply some of those constraints, and see how they cope with that.

if he thinks he will be better off with TNT then he is mistaken.
zero hours and minimum wage, thats what we are fighting to protect, and worse case scenario would be to end up like the poor posties at tnt.

The disadvantages of a zero hour contract depends entirely on the company you're working for...meweavy wrote:surely the op is trolling?

I've been told to generally expect as many hours as I'm legally able to work... and I'll never be short of full time hours, TNT is expanding for a reason.
And of course, there are opportunities within the company to progress on from the zero hour contract all new employees will be starting on,
However, when you're working for Royal Mail, and you go from full time onto a zero hour contract (which will be happening after 3 years), THAT is a worrying sign, that is going backwards...
As your position at Royal Mail is "securish" for 3 years... after that do you really think the new owners will still be paying you £10/hour? Not a chance.
The way I see it is TNT Post UK are showing signs of rapid growth and expansion, the Royal Mail is in bits with an unclear future... of course TNT is a hotter prospect and more exciting to work for, it goes without saying...
Take your extra 3 quid an hour, the best TNT posties will still be cashing out more than you at the end of the month because of the TNT bonus system... but even those who don't aim to smash bonus's, a grand/month in the bank is still a grand/month in the bank, especially when working for a much more prosperous company.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Re: TNT
Not what the boss said a few months ago...The way I see it is TNT Post UK are showing signs of rapid growth and expansion
Have they found a partner or are they still skint?Today, Verhagen said the plan was for a full roll out of end-to-end in the UK to contribute to PostNL profits by 2015. However, with PostNL suffering problems in the Dutch mail market, the company does not currently have the available capital to go it alone on the roll-out.
“Full roll-out of end-to-end in the UK would require EUR 50-80m investment,” she said. “We have absolute cash constraints in PostNL, so that means in England we are receptive to a partner willing to invest with us.”

Did you not watch dispatches? TNT posties having their days cut short so the managers could save money.
You obviously have no idea about RM either.
The place runs on overtime. I could do as many hours as I like and cash out way more than you ever could.
Royal mail isn't in bits in any way shape or form.
Though, that's not to say it might be if they are the subject of a take over bid.
And as for going from a FT job to zero hours contract, won't happen. They may try it, but I won't accept it. I'd sooner leave and stack shelves in a supermarket.

Re: TNT
Allow me to ask a simple question, you think zero hours contracts are fine because you can work all the hours you want.......what happens if you become ill, what about when you are on holiday (a legal requirement in this country) do you think it'll be so good then? Not to mention that the managers can just decide to no call you if you annoy him.BlackAndOrange wrote:The disadvantages of a zero hour contract depends entirely on the company you're working for...meweavy wrote:surely the op is trolling?

You think TNT is a brilliant company, that's admirable but don't be fooled, they are a ruthless company with managers who would do anything to get themselves a bigger bonus and if that means screwing you over then the will.

TNT posties in London seem to disagree, they're working to exhaustion, some of them are earning 2K/month working maximum hours and smashing bonus rounds.UnhappyGremlin wrote:Well, they're hardly likely to get a large uptake by telling the truth, are they?BlackAndOrange wrote:The disadvantages of a zero hour contract depends entirely on the company you're working for...meweavy wrote:surely the op is trolling?

It is a fact that Royal Mail posties will be in zero hour contracts and minimum wage in 3 years... Royal Mail wouldn't be able to compete otherwise, TNT is scooping up business mail contracts and Royal Mail is left delivering birthday cards and jail mail, companies are turning away from good old Royal Mail and are eyeing up the more stylish, younger TNT post UK with their cheaper prices and recorded delivery as standard... it's already happened in London and Manchester, like I said that is the tip of the iceberg, TNT have 5 more years of expanding to come.
Royal Mail posties seem to be really kept in the dark about this, a lot of you are under the impression that you're just transitioning from government to private, but it's much more complicated than that... Royal Mail are losing contracts left, right and center, next month RM will lose its tax exemption on stamps, and then the sky is the limit for competitors it will truly be an open playing field... TNT has been preparing for this moment for years in advance.
Royal Mail have been making a lot of noise about it in the past year, do a bit of research..
‘The postal industry is undergoing great change,’ said TNT Post chief executive Nick Wells.
But Royal Mail has accused its rival of cherry picking the most lucrative places – such as heavily populated urban areas – to deliver in.
Meanwhile Royal Mail is left having to fulfil a legal obligation to deliver post everywhere, six days a week.
