Get on your bike, rebooted: TNT Post boss says cycles support jobs -

The boss of rapidly-expanding postal service TNT Post has emphasised the potential of another kind of social mobility getting the unemployed into work and helping them stay there: improving jobseekers’ cycling skills.

It’s not quite an echo of former Conservative minister Norman Tebbit’s famous cry for the unemployed to get on their bikes, but Gary Robinson, the director of TNT Post UK’s end-to-end delivery organisation, says cycling can be highly “empowering”.

Robinson was speaking to recruiter.co.uk last week, following the announcement of another major recruitment drive as part of ambitious expansion plans at the company, which carries out all its deliveries by bike.

The company offers cycle training to staff, in line with national Bikeability standards.

He says the company’s experience in London “shows that cycling skills naturally transfer to personal life providing a healthy activity, increasing mobility and flexibility for individuals - overcoming personal and work related barriers that transport often poses for people moving into employment”.

Specifically, it can help individuals get into work more cheaply and often more quickly, or allow them to attend job interviews they might not have been able to, especially if they are unemployed or on a low wage and spare cash is a concern.

“I’m personally a believer that cycling can be a way to overcome those barriers,” he says.
