UP to 100 new jobs are to be delivered to Prestwich as part of a massive investment by a private postal firm.

TNT Post is to establish a delivery service in the town, serving Whitefield, Radcliffe and Bury.

It will be one of 11 delivery units being created across Greater Manchester by TNT Post, the UK’s largest private postal operator, and is set to bring more than 1,000 jobs to the area from November.

The location of the Prestwich unit has not yet been announced.

The facility will operate as a drop-off point for pre-sorted mail. The posties, by foot or on bikes, will then deliver the mail to homes and businesses. The other delivery units are to be set up in Manchester, Trafford, Salford and Wigan.

TNT Post is recruiting in the area with the support of Job Centre Plus and Avanta. The company has also used its own pre-employment training course which has so far dealt with more than 600 people. Job roles on offer include from posties to back office support.

Bosses stress the flexible nature of the work makes it ideal for locals, especially women returning to work, second jobbers, those balancing childcare commitments and school or college leavers.

The new delivery service will compete with the traditional Royal Mail operation. The TNT Post postie will complete their deliveries by bicycle, and the compnay says every letter, for the first time. will be scanned with a track and trace service to help provide a high quality of customer service.

Nick Wells, TNT Post chief executive the company was ‘passionate’ about creating job opportunities. He added: “The postal industry is undergoing great change and I am proud that TNT Post is able to create new jobs for people who need them and also to provide career opportunities for those who want to progress in a growing company.”

Tim Newns, of Manchester’s inward investment agency MIDAS, says he was “delighted” the company chose Greater Manchester for the next phase of its delivery service rollout.

MIDAS has been working with the postal company during the past year to help develop its delivery infrastructure, including finding the 11 delivery units the company will open Minister for Employment Mark Hoban also spoke of his delight in TNT Post’s job creation, saying: “Their record of offering opportunities to young people and long-term unemployed is impressive.”
