DELIVERY drivers have received a £1,800 pay rise – thanks to Channel Four documentary Undercover Boss.

Workers at DHL's Stoke base were awarded the pay out after company chief executive Phil Couchman went undercover as Australia ex-pat Eddie King in the show, which aired last night.

The programme saw 'Eddie' accompany 31-year-old courier Martin Booth, of Stoke-on-Trent, in his attempt to deliver eight parcels an hour using a road map.

During the show 'Eddie' discovered that workers in nearby Telford were being paid more than those in Stoke-on-Trent and vowed to investigate.

Martin said: "Well the theory is, that down the road in Telford, the starting wage is about £3,000 more a year.
"If that is the case, then I don't think it's fair.

"At the end of the day, all you want is to be paid for the job you do.

"If you are working hard every day and doing the best you can for the company, you would hope that you're paid the same as your colleagues."

Following the revelation, Mr Couchman, said: "The rumour that Telford are paid more than Stoke couriers really needs some investigation.

"Were I an employee and I knew that there was such a difference in my salary than the guy down the road, I'd be pretty de-motivated."
As part of the show workers were monitored on how they carry out their work on a daily basis, including those in the call centre, packing and driving sectors.

Mr Couchman added: "The expectations from the customers are high.

"I want to see how the couriers cope with long distances and taking shipments out to remote addresses. The number of shipments going through Stoke are pretty high so I am very interested in seeing how they cope."

'Eddie' told workers he had come to England in search of a job. But after revealing his true identity, he tells Martin that workers in Stoke-on-Trent will receive a £1,800 pay rise with immediate effect. In addition they will each receive a sat nav to help them meet their delivery targets.

The number of employees given the raise has not been revealed.

DHL is the world's leading postal and logistics group with centres in 220 countries and has more than 285,000 employees worldwide.
A spokesman for DHL UK said: "We welcomed the opportunity to be able to gain this unique insight into our business and look at ways to improve the workplace experience for all our employees. All topics raised in the programme are being addressed."

Jane Gratton, deputy chief executive of North Staffordshire Chamber of Commerce, said: "The chamber's Pay and Benefits report published last October covered a range of managerial, office and shop floor roles in North Staffordshire.

"It revealed that, for most job categories, our local workforce now receives a very similar rate of pay to comparative roles in the West Midlands.

"Indeed, for some jobs, local employers were paying higher rates of pay than the regional average."

So the difference might be £3k, but they will receive £1.8k, allegedly
Would have been more plausible if DHL had revealed how many employees exactly had received a raise.
