An 32-year-old postwoman was killed instantly when she apparently failed to see a stop sign on a train track - and was hit by a 120 kph express train at the Grimmenstein sortage depot in the Lower Austrian region of Neunkirchen.
Police said that the young woman had been the first to leave the depot and they are investigating how it was that she missed the stop signs before attempting to cross the track in her yellow postal van.
The regional express train had no chance to stop in time and it collided with the vehicle, killing the driver immediately and sending the van 40 metres through the air with mail scattered over a wide area.
The engine driver was treated for shock and the Aspang line to Vienna, where the train accident took place, was shut for an hour. No passengers aboard the regional express train that had four carriages were injured.
