Protesting Communication Workers' Union (CWU) members attacked a Post Office van in central Johannesburg on Wednesday morning.

The pelted it with stones in Jorissen Street, forcing the driver to reverse around a corner.

About 100 of the union's members, employed by the SA Post Office (Sapo) in Gauteng, converged on Cosatu House in Braamfontein to protest against an unresolved labour broking agreement. Most of them were dressed in Sapo uniforms. The CWU is affiliated to the Congress of SA Trade Unions.

CWU spokesman Matankana Mothapo said all Post Office depots and mail centres in Gauteng would be closed on Wednesday.

“The protest is as a result of the unresolved 2005 agreement entered into by both CWU and Sapo to covert labour brokers to permanent positions in the company.”

He said the CWU wanted the dismissals of Pieter Swart, senior general manager of mail delivery, as well as Janras Kotsi, the group's mail business executive.

“Both of them are the culprits of sabotaging the 2005 agreement,” he claimed.

Protesters would march to Sapo's regional office to hand over a first memorandum, and then to the premier's office to hand over another. - Sapa
