160 self-employed drivers needed at Expert Logistics in Crewe

A LOGISTICS firm is looking to recruit 160 self-employed drivers at its new South Cheshire base.

Expert Logistics, which specialises in white goods distribution, will create a total of 350 jobs when it moves to Crewe early next year.

The company launched a recruitment drive for 80 two-man delivery teams at The Georges Community Centre, in West Street, Crewe, on Saturday.

The open day was attended by 22 prospective applicants, with eight of them filling in application forms.

Expert Logistics has become a corporate patron at The Georges, and will be holding further recruitment events at the centre in the coming weeks.

As well as drivers, the company will also be looking to recruit warehouse staff.

Ron Ambrose, crew development manager for Expert Logistics, said: "The response to the open day has been quite good. I think the difficult part for a lot of people is the fact that we're looking for self-employed drivers, which can put off some people. But we are working with the Blue Orchid agency to help applicants overcome that difficulty.

"We've had a mix of different people coming to us on the open day. Some have been unemployed, some have recently been made redundant, while others are at risk of being made redundant. Others were interested in becoming self-employed."

Expert Logistics will be moving into the 360,000 sq feet Crewe 360 warehouse development in Weston Road next year.

In the short-term the company is leasing the former Royal Mail site, also in Weston Road, from Cheshire East Council.

Mr Ambrose said the partnership arrangement with The Georges was mutually beneficial.

He said: "It's great having this partnership with The Georges, as we can have the banners outside letting people know that we are here and we're recruiting.

"Once people come in they can use the facilities here as well, which means additional funds for the community centre. We're also right in the heart of the community where we're looking to recruit."

The Georges, formerly Marshfield Bank Community Centre, was reopened 12 weeks ago by Cheshire-based social business Big Society Works Ltd.

Anne Ibrahim, executive director of Big Society Works Ltd, said: "We are thrilled to have secured such a proactive business as our first corporate patron. It's fantastic to witness the lengths that the company are going to, to provide access to employment opportunities for local people."

Standard procedure with a lot of couriers. They don't have to pay them a wage or salary they pay them per delivery.
