Portuguese government published list of companies to be privatised in 2012

Lisbon, Portugal, 18 Oct – The Portuguese government plans in 2012 to privatise airline TAP-Air Portugal, airport manager ANA-Aeroportos e Navegação Aérea, rail cargo company CP Carga and postal service, CTT, according to the State Budget proposal delivered Monday in parliament.

In the document, which lists the liberalisation of the postal sector as a priority, the government puts forward the reduction of the State business sector (SEE) as a focus of the medium-term budget strategy.

“The size of the SEE, in terms of volume of actual or contingent responsibilities for the State, represents a very significant risk to the objectives of consolidation of public finances,” said the budget report fro 2012.

In the mid term the government’s aim is thus to reduce by at least 20 percent, “the number of companies included in the main stakeholding portfolio of the Directorate General for the Treasury and Finance and of Parpública – Participações Públicas, SGPS,” through privatizations, mergers or closing down companies.

In relation to privatisations in 2012, the Budget report points to selling off, by the end of next year, ANA, the Portuguese airport operator, of air carrier TAP, rail cargo operator CP Carga and mail company CTT, Correios de Portugal.

According to the same document, the government next year expects to use 4 billion euros of revenues accrued from privatisations to pay down its debt. (macauhub)
