Retirees of the Nigeria Postal Service (NIPOST) in Osun State Wednesday staged a peaceful protest to demand for the payment of their six years outstanding pension arrears totalling over ₦4 billion from the federal government.

The retirees, who were mostly aged people, decried the treatment meted out to them by the management of NIPOST and the federal government, saying many of them have died as a result of poor standard of living occasioned by the non-payment of their pension.

The NIPOST retirees, led by one Azees Alimi, said about 50 retirees of the agency in the state have lost their lives due to neglect and uncaring attitude of the NIPOST management.

Mr Alimi blamed the federal ministry of finance and the management of NIPOST for their plight, saying they could no longer bear the "hide-and-seek game" being played by the management.

He contended that the management of NIPOST have reneged on its promise to pay their arrears more than three occasions, adding that they could no longer tolerate government's lackadaisical attitude.

According to him, over 1,200 retirees across the country are yet to be verified due to the lackadaisical attitude of the federal ministry of finance and the NIPOST management.

He noted that over 300 pensioners in Osun State were finding things difficult, saying some of them have been ejected out of their various houses, while many are unable to pay their children's school fees.
