Police find thousands of undelivered letters in postman's home

Dresden - Police found about 5,000 undelivered letters and parcels in a mail deliverer's home in the eastern German city of Dresden, investigators reported Friday.

The man faces charges of violating postal law for allegedly diverting the mail between 2006 and 2010. Suspicions were raised when a firm reported to police that customers were not receiving registered mail it had sent.

Police found 500 court summons and multiple pieces of registered mail among the 30 cases and 14 plastic bags of mail stuffed into closets, the basement and a car.

Police allege the postman simply filled out the receipts and mailed them back himself. He also allegedly kept advertising gifts like cups and bike helmets for himself.
