Rolling strikes rock Canada Post

Postwomen and postmen in the Canadian cities of Victoria and Moncton returned to work last night and 4,000 postal workers in Calgary and Edmonton took their place in the front line as their union's "rotating strike" continued to rock postal bosses today.

Members of the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW-STTP) began the walkouts just before midnight last Thursday, the Winnipeg Local (branch) striking the first blow in this national dispute with Canada Post over threatened pay cuts and attacks on workers' hard-won terms and conditions.

For 24 hours, postal workers in the "world's coldest city" stood solid before passing on the baton to their comrades in Hamilton, near Niagara Falls, where postal services were halted through the weekend. The fight switched to the Quebec city of Montreal for 24 hours from midnight on Sunday and then the union opened two new fronts yesterday.

Union national president Denis Lemelin praised members for their solid support for the action and vowed that the fight - and the innovative tactics being used - would continue until a fair settlement is found.

"Postal workers are on strike to keep the pressure on," he insisted, adding: "We will not accept the rollbacks that this profitable company is trying to force us to swallow."

And support for the Canadian workers' fight came from our own CWU, head of international affairs John Baldwin praising "our comrades from CUPW-STTP" for "standing solidly in support of the hard won pay and conditions of previous generations.

"They are to be saluted for their refusal to be bullied by Canada Post using all of the arguments we in the postal sector are so familiar with. The myth that postal workers are paid too much and are inefficient must be exposed and our Canadian counterparts are leading that fight"
