Sri Lanka’s Postal Services Ministry Secretary Hemasiri Fernando will be temporarily overseeing the functions of the Post Master General, the Minister Jeevan Kumaratunga told reporters.
The minister also said that an investigation has been launched on the Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake, over allegations raised against him by the Postal workers.
A coalition of Postal Department trade unions had recently held a march in Colombo against the Post Master General and urged the government to remove him.
They also boycott the overtime work.
As a result of this trade union action, nearly two million letters are piled up at the Colombo’s Central Mail Exchange. Nearly 100,000 ‘Registered post’ letters and 30,000 mailbags also remain unattended at the sorting office.
Meanwhile the Post Master General M.K.B. Dissanayake said recently that the Postal Department is ready to provide an efficient service despite strike threats from certain trade unions.
