Minneapolis police are investigating a bizarre case of animal cruelty where a woman allegedly tried to send a puppy through the US Mail, myFOXtwincities.com reported Monday.
Postal workers noticed a package was moving after it was brought in to a downtown Minneapolis post office last Tuesday. They then found the puppy inside.
The box had no air holes, food or water. It would have been shipped by air in an unpressurized and unheated part of the plane. A postal inspector said the dog almost certainly would have died.
The four-month-old poodle mix is in the custody of animal control.
The suspect who tried to mail the puppy is 39-year-old Stacey Champion.
Champion is charged with misdemeanor animal cruelty but could face more serious federal charges of trying to ship live animals by mail.
Police said Champion was attempting to send the dog to Georgia as a gift.
