Jersey Post should reduce their service from six days to five days a week, the Consumer Council has suggested.
Senator Alan Breckon, Consumer Council Chairman, says the move would help Jersey Post to cut costs and relieve the burden on the struggling service.
The council also proposed that the two companies recently given new postal licences, should contribute to the running of Jersey Post.
Hub Europe and Citipost have been granted licences to operate corporate postal services in the island in competition with Jersey Post.
But the Consumer Council Chairman says if Hub Europe and Citipost are allowed to cherry pick the most profitable area - large packets and parcels - then they should pay towards the core service.
Jersey Post has struggled in recent years with rising costs and falling volumes of mail.
The consumer council has written to the competition watchdog with concerns about the future of postal services.
Hub Europe and Citipost were granted licences by the Jersey Competition and Regulatory Authority in October last year to provide postal services in Jersey.
They have been able to provide postal services to the business sector delivering large packets from late 2010 and large letters from January 2012.
Senator Breckon said of the current service: "In 2009 it actually lost £5 million and if the JCRA or anybody else is going to allow people in, allow the competition it's generally felt they should make a contribution to the universal service obligation which guarantees or helps to guarantee, the basic postal service."
