Members of two Postal Service unions did informational picketing outside the North Bay mail processing center in Petaluma on Thursday, protesting a plan to downsize the facility.
"We’re concerned about the loss of jobs,” said Dot Henderson, president of the local Mail Handlers Union. “It’s also going to delay the mail.”
Members of the American Postal Workers Union also took part. About 20 union members handed out fliers to postal customers.
A Postal Service study recommends closing part of its Petaluma processing center and moving some of the jobs to Oakland to save money. About 34 of the North Bay center's 360 jobs could be affected, but service won’t be affected, the Postal Service said.
The regional postal facility at 1150 N. McDowell Blvd. handles mail for Sonoma, Marin, Mendocino and Lake counties.
The service will seek public comments on its proposal at 6 p.m. on Jan. 20 in a meeting at the Petaluma Community Center.
