Hermes/Parcelnet on Newsnight this week ...

Post by webtrekker »

As you probably know, I am a Hermes courier and can reliably inform you that Newsnight (Friday, 3 Dec, at 22:30 on BBC2) will be discussing exploitation of so-called 'self-employed' Hermes couriers. One of our couriers will be involved. She had her work withdrawn by Hermes because she had to be admitted to hospital!

I can't say any more than that at the moment but the show could be an eye-opener for anyone wondering what things are really like in the private sector.

Apologies! The show is now scheduled for Friday, 3 Dec, at 22:30 on BBC2. Apparently things have been happening in the background. I believe Hermes have applied for an injunction to try and stop the show but I can't be 100% certain on that. Anyway, that just makes it even MORE interesting!

Wiki...
On Newsnight on Dec 03 2010 there was a heated debate with Jack Dromey MP about self-employed couriers who earn less than the minimum wage. When asked about the minimum wage, Stelzer agreed minimum wages are important. However, he also stated it is legal for self-employed workers to be paid less than the minimum wage. Stelzer considers this choice to be an important part of the economic drive to reduce prices, provide opportunity and create growth etc. Stelzer mentioned several times how he started in business by delivering flowers for "25 cents a shot" to compare himself with the couriers who are paid only 50 pence per delivery. In the heat of the debate though Stelzer forgot to take inflation into account. Stelzer, in his youth, would have been paid a fortune and left with a large profit when compared with the current UK couriers.

Missed it on Friday, but watched it on Catch Up TV. The Hermes Delivery drivers are paid 50p for each parcel delivered
regardless of size. One guy who had earned £23 for a days work, had delivered a 7" Christmas tree, a garden bench and
a set of tyres for 50p each. A woman had earned £401 for three weeks work, but had spent £100 on petrol, she was told
she would lose her job if she could not provide a replacement driver while she had to go into hospital for an operation.

It is now on YouTube! You can see it here ..... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_0MgdNlIswM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Apparently, Hermes are complaining to the Beeb that the programme was biased! If only all the information in those subtitles had been shown everyone would see how bad Hermes REALLY are!
