Five delivery drivers have been prosecuted after taking bribes to deliver mail-order mobile phones to the wrong addresses. The delivery drivers, all working for the courier company, City Link delivered nearly 200 phones, worth around £310 each to the orchestrator of the scam in return for a cash payment, Bristol Crown Court heard.

The phones had been ordered on the internet from Carphone Warehouse using genuine postcodes with false names. The delivery drivers were then paid to deliver the phones to the organiser instead of the address on the parcel.

The five drivers were handed a six-month prison sentences, suspended for 12 months, along with 150 hours of unpaid work.

Paul Cook, prosecuting, said "The modus operandi was a system which Carphone Warehouse had seen on previous occasions."

He added the five men were not the masterminds behind the fraud, saying: "Often there are people involved from outside City Link who make contact with people inside the company.
