Finland - Talks Continue in Postal Dispute

Talks continued Sunday aimed at agreement on a new contract for the nation's postal workers. The union representing workers has announced a series of spot strikes across the country beginning on Tuesday if no new contract is negotiated before then.

National conciliator Esa Lonka has called a meeting with the parties to the dispute on late Monday afternoon to report on their positions. The sticking points in talks concern night shifts, outsourcing, and the use of temporary and part-time workers.

Postal workers have warned of spot strikes beginning as of Tuesday if no agreement is forthcoming by then. The first is scheduled for the postal centre in Turku.
Last week, postal workers staged walkouts that caused delays in deliveries. Also, a self-imposed ban on overtime work that came into effect on October 20 has slowed delivery services. The overtime ban does not, however, apply to newspaper deliveries.
